FG and Lisa S (Propecia, Finasteride for Women)

I took spiro starting at 12.5mg and worked up to 150mg over 2-3 months. I was doing ok until the third month, I had massive bleeding so quit for a week, and some time after that I began to take it rather erratically so as to prevent nonstop periods, i.e. only when not having a period, which turned out to be less and less often, spiro bringing them very close together. All hell broke loose in October. I somehow overlooked this on my labs, I had quite a few of them done, but my DHEA during this mess was quite high, top of the range. Thanks for the fibroids idea, but the erratic bleeding quit when I quit spiro, I'm quite certain it was spiro as I looked at my out of range high E which partially explains the whole mess.

Sorry gals, I may have to recant on the whole 5AR-1 v. 5AR-2 deal I thought I'd sort of figured out, due to a recent study by Merck brought to my attention on the acne forum that a 5AR-1 inhibitor had no effect on acne after 2 months. A copy of that study is en route to my mailbox. Also, studies show that people with acne have LOWER levels of 5AR-1 than do normal controls. Both of you are probably thinking, who cares?, I don't have acne? but let me explain. I thought what caused acne and sebum is also what causes hair loss, i.e. secretions of the oil glands, but it seems I'm wrong or only partly right. It's all a lot more involved than I thought (duh) and there's something called 17-beta-hydroxy-blahblahblah involved.

Don't believe everything you read, and that includes stuff I write too.

I am still traveling to another doc to ask for Avodart but I'm admittedly feeling much less hopeful about it (and I wasn't even that hopeful to begin with, due to the possibility of dreaded RH/upregulation). I'll keep you posted.

I'm definitely not a doctor or in the medical field, I'm so far from it, but I take that as a compliment and say thanks!

Good luck gals and if you are interested in the studies let me know.

» Do you think that the problems you had with spiro are due to the fact that
» you started out at 100 mg per day vs. a lower dosage? I have been using
» spiro for 1 year at 25 mg per day and my Dr. recently bumped it up to 50
» mg daily (25 am and 25 pm). I did have problems with my menstrual cycles
» (bleeding every 2 weeks), but learned that I had fibroids which were
» finally removed in June. EB - have you been checked for fibroids? I too
» thought my bleeding was hormonal, but as I said, it turned out to be
» fibroids.
»
» Also, I am using naturally compounded bioidentical hormones after falling
» estrogen levels caused by going off pill (Demulen) combined with peri. I
» am using biest & progesterone together along with proscar (2.5 mg daily)
» and spiro. I am not cycling, but have some random spotting here and
» there.
»
» I finally feel that I am having some success with my hl. I went to a new
» endo a few weeks ago who advised me that in light of all the havoc that
» the fibroids were wreaking on my system, I should start with June (when I
» had the fibroids removed) as the date from which to judge the efficacy of
» my treatment, as opposed to last December 2006 when I started the Proscar
» because the effectiveness of the treatments would have been compromised
» until my other problems were corrected. I would say that for the last
» month or so, my sheds have decreased somewhat (I've stopped counting) and
» I do have regrowth sticking up all around my head. Also, my texture is
» slightly improved. In answer to your previous question, EB, I have not
» been diagnosed by a doctor with AGA, but as I said, my internist
» aggressively treated my hl from the start.
»
» I just want to say that your posts are consistently helpful to me and I am
» impressed by your technical grasp of difficult hormonal issues. Thanks for
» everything.
