Can someone help me understand my shocking hair loss? (Accutane or Medications Induced Hair Loss)
Hi,
I am 29 going on 30, and did 8 months of Accutane in 2004-2005 to battle a horrible breakout (adult acne, never had a zit as a teen!) that would not go away despite 2 yrs of minocycline etc. The skin cleared up, but then the joint aches started, and then came the hairloss. I had a head full of hair... and now it is so bad i can see my scalp if you take a picture from above. It makes me cry.
My PCP had put me on Allese in 2004 but the generic Levora is what I used to take thanks to the insurance restrictions. My skin started breaking out, and in Dec2006 on a trip to my native country India a gynae there did some blood tests and ultrasounds/x-rays after listening to my symptoms (inexplicable weight gain, hairloss, dark toes, acne of the fringes of the face and on the forehead - like a reddish rash) - she found I had some cysts in my ovary like in PCOS. She also put me on Diane 35.
Back in the US my PCP checked these and then referred me to an endocrinologist. He checked my androgen levels etc (the works), but since I was already taking Diane 35 all tests show normal levels.
I also show symptoms such as hypoglycemia / insulin resistance, but again levels seem to be normal. Between Jan - August 2007 I saw quite a bit of hair regrowth, my skin glowed and I began to lose weight with proper diet & exercise.
I am getting married in Jan 2008, and the past couple of months have been stressfull. However, I've had a lot more stress earlier in life. But the last two months I've had a HUGE amount of hairfall. Now my scalp shows. My fiance doesn't get how depressing it is although he's supportive of anything I might want to do.
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME out there? I know this is a LONG post, but I am so frustrated right now. I had a whole bunch of endocrinology tests done again, and ALL LEVELS ARE NORMAL. It's been 10 months on Diane 35 and so far it has been fine. No visible side effects - except my hairloss has started again.
Can someone give some pointers / info on what I can do? Minoxidil has never worked for me. IT only makes my hair sticky and shows my scalp even more.
I also want to have babies in a couple of years, so the docs told me to stay off it.
I am going to be a bride in 3 months... and i HATE the way my hair looks now. It is depressing. I'm hoping someone can tellme if it is Diane that's doing this... or can stress really lead to such rapid hairloss? If so... what could I do? The doctors seem so unconcerned about it..they just shrug and tell you to take it in your stride.
