Sclap pull test results (Cyproterone Acetate (Diane35))
Hi Sadie
» This is it, and this is the first question i think i posed on this forum.
» Is thinning the same as shedding? One is a physical detachment of the hair
» from the head, and the other is just hair not growing back or, if it does
» grow back, it grows back as vellus / fine hair. Mine is the latter - i
» never shed physical hair so to see it in my hand/pillow/on the floor etc,
» but my hair thinned and what was once thick hair is now very fine lifeless
» and vellus type hair. Does that make sense? Maybe some of the hair hasnt
» grown back thereby reducing the overall density of my scalp hair, or maybe
» the hairs that have grown through their natural cycle have gradually
» miniturised. I and Dr Fenton think it is the latter.
I completely agree with your distinction between thinning and shedding. But that's what I find odd the telogen rate definitely refers to how much hair is falling out, so 18% on top would imply that you're shedding, which you're clearly not. I think it is the case that the hair that does fall doesn't grow back as thick. And that all makes sense, but why telogen rate would be so high I just don't understand.
» Wow! That is good to know Carly. Sounds like it was TE then, or are you
» still shedding? Perhaps regular scalp tests are what is needed?
I am not sure you remember me but I was the one who saw Dr Rushton and Dr Fenton and preferred the former. Will just remind you, when I went to see Dr Fenton a year after my shedding started he told me my iron was low but did not mention that my hormone levels were abnormal and indicative of PCOS. Anyway I got my iron up shedding stopped for a while (that was the 4% phase) but then it started in a horrible way. Four months later I saw Dr Rushton who told me my blood tests were abnormal and told me to see an Endocrinologist. I found out that my thyroid was messed up (had high antibodies and a high tsh) and PCOS. Was put on thyroxine and yasmin and my tsh only came down recently since which the shed has stopped. However it would seem that I am suffering the same as you, although I haven't really been shedding of late my hair looks terrible...
» I think it was last around 1.59 (September). That is up from 1.29 in July.
» I'm awaiting further results this week when my GP can be asked letting me
» know. At least with private i would have had someone call me within 7
» days!
I am glad that you're keeping an eye on your thyroid, believe me you want to catch it before it goes up cos the shedding that goes with it is heart-breaking. My hair didn't look that bad until I started shedding from the thyroid problem. Also, be aware that that thyroid problems reduce the diameter of hair as well as cause hair loss...it does look like your tsh is on the way up perhaps when it gets over 2 a good endo will put you on a small dosage of thyroxine?
» Carly how is your hair now? Are you on a BCP for it? I dont know what your
» diagnosis is. And what do you think of Dr Fenton?
My hair is terrible now I have 50% of my original hair and it is very bad at the front - hairline and temples....
As I said before, I didn't like Dr Fenton. I did at first but the more I saw him the more I felt that he wanted my money more than he wanted to help me, and he would always be telling me to go back and see him, to do more pull tests etc all of which equal = more money! He also gave me the diagnosis of TE based on the fact that I was shedding both from the top and the back which I now realised delayed my treatment, because diffuse shedding can be due to AGA too. Had he let me know that my hormones were out of whack then I would have found out almost a year earlier that I had pcos.
Personally I think that he knew that if he told me that then I wouldn't need to go back to him...I know it's really negative but I just cannot see why he would ignore those results otherwise. I went to him with lots of GP blood results and he made me go for even more blood tests most of which were results which I already had!
Anyway moaning about him is not going to help my hair now!
I remember you saying that you had high prolactin levels, not sure if you already researched into it but I came across this recently
http://www.androgeneticalopecia.com/hair-loss-men-women/hair-loss-androgens-women.shtml
The paragraph above the heading research outcomes is about high prolactin levels.
Maybe when you next see an endo you can mention it?
Wish you all the best
