So many questions...long (Menopause, Peri-menopause & Hair Loss)
» I just found this forum and have so many questions that I would love to
» have answered.
» Around the middle of November, my hair started to fall out, usually in the
» shower, it would clump in my hands. Of course, having had gorgeous, thick
» hair all my life (57 yrs old, probably post menopausal now)I freaked out.
» My bathroom is full of hair...on the floor, walls, sink, everyplace. I
» can't keep up with the shedding. How do you estimate the amount of hairs
» shed each day? It is so overwhelming at his point.
» I had an appointment with a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss,
» but he was so unprofessional, that I decided to seek out someone else. I
» have 2 appointments scheduled in NYC, one at Mt Sinai Medical Center, and
» one at NYU (first available appt in late June!)
» All my blood work came back normal, and the original doctor diagnosed
» female pattern baldness. He prescribed Minoxidil, nothing else. No follow
» up suggested...nothing. I have been using this for about a month, see no
» difference. I am trying to make an appointment with an endocrinologist,
» and will see my gynecologist later this week.
» Am I on the right path, seeking out a better, more complete diagnosis, or
» am I just chasing my tail? No one would really be able to judge that my
» hair is falling out at this point, so I am on a mission to get help before
» it becomes noticable. I dread the possiblity that I would need a wig or
» hair replacement later on, it just freaks me out. I have also contacted a
» colleague to recommend a therapist, my quality of life is too fragile at
» this point. I cry at any moment, do not feel like socializing. My
» boyfriend is very supportive, but I still feel vulnerable and I am afraid
» I might lose him because of baldness.
» Any comments would be appreciated. I hope I am seeking out the correct
» path to finding some answers.
Squeaky I just want to add that it's really smart to get help early. I wish that someone had told me to go get my hormones looked at way earlier in the game. I would have at least a good 1 1/2 years worth of hair now that I lost going to useless doctors. I went to two derms and two gyns and it was a total waste. Your situation sounds pretty straightforward as mine did (but of course not for derms or other doctors) so going to an endocrinologist who specializes in menopause will probably be the best bet for you.
