Does minoxidil prevents death of folicules? (Rogaine, Minoxidil)

Hi,
I've read about minoxidil and as far as I have been able to figure out, minoxidil lengthens the time a hair growth. I.e., without minoxidil the hair falls out sooner. BUT, does it prevent death of follicles?

Ie., does it truly help to slow/stop hair loss OR
does it make hair appear fuller only by keeping hairs growing longer, while underneath DHT keeps killing hair follicles?

I am trying to understand what happened to me since I used rogaine for about 4 years and thought hair was ok, but turns out that my hair loss has actually very much progressed.
