It aint working (Rogaine, Minoxidil)

posted by j, 17.02.2008, 14:40

I think so. I feel good about my hair and went for a very long time feeling really, really crappy about it.

It's hard to answer in a way, though. Have I really regrown that much hair or do I just feel better about it? A: A bit of both, I think. I've regrown some -- not all. A corollary: It's not getting worse, which is also good. But I also feel better about my hair, which has thickened up from its thinnest days which, in retrospect, may have been caused by sheds induced by treatment.

My HL issues are/were mostly at my hairline around my temples and forehead -- the way guys bald. Once I noticed that, and started Rogaine (2pct at first), I went through a series of sheds of hair from all over my head. Those may have been Rogaine-related or I may simply have been paying more attention to my hair.

When I first noticed all this, I was focused on my temples, where I suddenly realized the hair was really, really thin and the thin/bald areas were creeping up. I felt like I couldn't wear my hair in a ponytail then because I was very embarrassed about these huge eaten-away areas at my temples.

I still have deeper indents on my temples than I ever had before but they have lessened a little and there are bits of hair there so they're not shiny bald and that's all to the good. I also started highlighting my hair and now have it cut by a really good stylist so I feel much better about my hair on those counts too.

Another question: Would my hair have recovered on its own? Did it, in fact, recover (to an extent) on its own? A: Dunno. But I'm sticking with the Rogaine and the Niz for good. They're simply part of my regimen. I use the Rogaine only at night and don't panic if I miss a night. I wash my hair about every other day.

Did the Rogaine make me, initially, lose more hair than I would have otherwise? Then did it help it to grow back? A: Maybe. Or probably. Initially, I used the 2pct day and night and saw no results. After perhaps seven months, I bought 5pct and used it at night and the 2pct in the morning. I can't really remember the dates but eventually I stopped using any Rogaine in the morning because I couldn't stand to have it shining on head when I went to work. The foam wasn't out then. Plus, I just didn't want to feel so, so dependent on it -- that I had to use it night AND day.

All of those changes may have caused sheds, etc.

I stopped the Rogaine for several weeks once when I realized it was making me dizzy. Then I went back because I felt so crappy about my hair. I've never had the dizziness problem since. At some point, I added the Nizoral and that's come to be my regime. It's easy, I feel so much better about my hair and feel it looks good. But I was years getting to this point.

I never had blood tests or went on other drugs. I did try a huge array of vitamins/supplements for a while but never felt like they did much.

Sorry to be so long-winded but remember how it was when I was looking for answers -- it helped to read the story of someone who had been there or still was there.
