Someone please read and help me!! (Anemia & Hair Loss)

posted by mom2kormas, 16.03.2008, 11:14

Hi all. I am a 37 year old female that has been having diffuse hair loss for almost 2 years now. I think I have pinpointed the onset to coming off of Yasmin in December '05. I have also been under a tremendous amount of stress nonstop since moving to a new state including foreclosure, husband out of work and chronic back pain. I have been to a million "ologists" over the past year and still feel like I haven't been fully diagnosed. One derma said I wasn't losing hair, another derma said it was FPB and to take Rogaine. My last endo said that it was probably from coming off the pill and put me back on it. He also said that the major cause was stress and that it is possible to go completely bald from it! I don't know how to not stress with all that is going on in my life. I've been walking despite pain, eating healthy, started counseling and just praying that this will all come to an end soon.

Here are my latest lab results:

DHEA-S = 37 (40-325) LOW
Prolactin = 13.8 (3.0-30.0)
Testosterone = 23 (20-76)
TSH w/reflex to FT4 = 1.49 (0.40-4.50)

I also had FSH and LH done, but am not sure what stage my cycle was in? I know it was day 19, but since my cycle has changed from every 28 days to every 21, does that affect things? I am still awaiting other thyroid test results from another endo, but in the past they always seem "normal" for the most part, although I think they are borderline low?

So, I started the Yasmin, but now I read that it has anti-androgenetic properties and am wondering if this is going to lower my DHEA and testosterone further? I have read that low DHEA can result in hair loss and depression? I have also read that it is not safe to supplement DHEA or testosterone if you have androgenetic alopecia (which I pray, is not the case, but am still leery). Also, I read that you are supposed to have your thyroid checked 6-8 weeks after starting Yasmin? Does that mean it can make me hypo?? I've read not to take Yasmin if you have adrenal disease. Would my low DHEA be enough to say that I am leaning towards adrenal fatigue and maybe shouldn't take Yasmin? What other pill may be of help? I feel I have the symptoms of low Estrogen and think an addition of BCP could help, but am leary of side affects.

I am also leaning towards low iron as a cause after my last ferritin test, but endo said not to supplement because other iron tests were near top?

Iron total = 105 (40-175)
Iron binding capacity = 408 (250-450)
%Saturation = 26 (15-50)
Ferritin = 27 (10-154) This went down from 63 in less than a year?

I hope someone can lead me in the right direction. I hate with feeling of uncertainty. I wish I could just trust my docs recommendations, but from all I read, we are usually our own best doctors. I am not sure being on Yasmin is the best idea? I'm contemplating using a low dose of dhea, but am afraid of the side effects. I just don't know what to do? The hair loss seems so much worse right before my period, so I'm wondering if the Yasmin would be beneficial? My head is spinning...someone please help!

Thank you all in advance,
Kim
