A SOLUTION THAT WILL WORK FOR EVERYONE..... (Hair & Scalp Odor Problem)

posted by Vivian, 31.03.2008, 18:53

Hi everyone,
I'm so happy that I found this site again. The weblink was in another computer that I had, and now that I no longer have that computer, for the life of me, I couldn't find this website to share in what I believe is a solution for everyone....

I say solution, because in reality, there is no cure. Just temporary solutions that suppresses the problem that we have. The only cure that there really has been in life was for Polio.

Anyway, I'll stop keeping everyone in suspense ------> it's Cortisone injections.

Yes ladies, Cortisone injection is my miracle, and the thing is, I didn't know it until after I went back to the dermatologist that I use to see for years.

I was going to make this a short message; but in waiting for my user ID to be activated, I was able to go back to almost all of the threads and read thru what everyone has said, and I can almost sympathise, and rule out all of the conditions that were mentioned. At least for my case.

Here we go:

1) Just to put it out there, I do suffer from a scalp/skin condition ----> Seborrhoeic dermititis. But, I actually don't believe this is the reason that my scalp is giving off odor. Anyone can google, what the condition is, but for the most part I had the issue with my scalp being crusty for years now, but it was probably about 4/5yrs ago that I finally went to the derm and she diagnosed me with this; and it was only until early last year that I noticed the odor. Perhaps i had the odor for a bit longer, but since I've been seeing her, she always gave me the cortisone injections, so I can't say why/when I started the odor. The shots have always suppressed the odor, so it's hard for me to give a target date of when it really started, but I can say it didn't start when I had the crusty dermitis b/c the odor was never there in the beginning.

- side note-
Besides my scalp, I started to see the derm b/c of my acne problem. I'm naturally an oily person, and I went on Accutane to help clear up my skin. After finishing with the med, I always kept up with my doctor appt. to ensure that my skin continued to look great. With that, she always gave me the injection in my face and scalp to help control the oil. Preventing most of the acne from coming back, and from my scalp becoming too crusty again. So again, b/c I always saw her, I can't say when the odor started, becasue she'd always given me the injections.

Anyway, i stopped seeing her for pretty much all of last year b/c a I got a new job, located downtown, and she was uptown, so the travel was a bit of an inconvience. My skin looked great, and I still has a good amount of all of the meds that she prescribed for me to use for my dermititis and to help control my acne. So I said to my self, I don't really need her anymore. Big mistake.

I think sometime early last year the odor started. I noticed ppl. started acting differently towards me, and putting on scented lotion when I came around. It was a pattern that almost everyone did, so it took a few months for me to finally realise what it was. It was my hair; more specifically, my scalp was emitting this foul, musty odor. An odor that I was familiar with, b/c that's how my hair usually smelled when it was getting close to when I needed to wash my hair. But the scent was 10X stronger, and it traveled throughout the room. Which is what I didn't realise. I had to really focus in on the odor, and how ppl. were acting towards me to realise that the odor was actually traveling across the room.

I decided to go to another derm that was close to the downtown office and plead my case. He wasn't sure what the problem could be, but at the same time, he wanted to smell the odor. I made the mistake of washing my hair the night before i saw him, so I didn't have that strong punget odor to give him as proof of my dilemma. From previously reading this forum, I know a lot of ppl through out the possbibilty of a fungus infection. Which is what I told him repeatedly of what it could be. With that, he took his pen out, and was getting ready to prescribe me with a shampoo for the fungus

2) This brings me to my second issue: FUNGUS

The problem (at least with me) could not be fungus b/c what he was going to prescibe for me was a shampoo that my previous uptown Dr. had already given me, and I still had some left, it's Loprox shampoo. As per the downtown Dr. he said that it was the number one drug on the Market to combat fungus in the scalp. If I had been using that - which I did, and pretty much finished the bottle - then there was really nothing else that he could prescribe. He wanted me to come back, when my hair was giving off the odor, and we'd take it from there; but I knew it was a waste of time to go back, since he already told me that he pretty much didn't have a solution for me.

3) When I stumbled on this forum last year, I tried some of the things that were suggested, selsun, Tgel, and Tar shampoo, etc.....it didn't work. I should have also mentioned that I am a black women, so technically, I should not be washing my hair on a daily basis, but last year, I started to wash it atleast every other day, using the shampoos that I mentioned. It didn't work. Just to atleast help my psyche, I continued to wash, even though I was loosing a lot of hair. I atleast wanted to feel like I was making an effort.

4) I suffer from other issues, which caused me to take other things, but like what has already been mentioned in the forum: Zinc, probiotic, multivitamins, etc. I've gone on Candida cleanses that lasted for 2weeks, etc. None of them helped with the other issue that I had, and now thinking about it, I didn't help with the scalp odor. I also don't eat red meat or pork.

5) My mother and brother both suffer from Thyroid disease, and a few years ago, was having some extreme issues, one being fatigue. I thought that I had thyroid disease myself. Endocronologist, after endocronologist told me that I did not have thyroid disease. Now, this was a few years a ago that I went to this specialist; but I can confidently say that with seeing many doctors thru out the years I can finally say that no matter what issues anyone of us have, we can all to a certain extent rule out a lot of things.

Some of the other symptoms that ppl believe to be a problem with what may be causing the odor (ie. Sinus infection, or Candida infection, tmau) I come to the realization that you'd really have to have other serious symptoms besides that scalp odor to diagnose your self with having any other symptom/disease that has been and will be mentioned in this forum. I think that's important for any of us to keep in mind. With a sinus infection, for example, if you do not have that excrutiating pain in your sinsus cavity, then you most likely don't have a sinus infection. Someone had mention a possible liver, but with the liver, a lot of times liver issues can usually be visible such as having jaundis. Going to a Dr. and telling them that you have this minor problem with your scalp (I say minor in terms of it being linked to some of the serious diseases that have been mentioned) and not having other symptoms to corrberrate our suspiscions of another disease, then I think it's time for us to realize it can't be these major diseases, b/c again, we'd have noticed other problem goings on with us. Perhaps some of you have!!

6) I didn't mention that products that i use for my dermitis (Clobex shampoo, Clobex lotion, and DermaSmooth oil). It works great for the dermitis, but again, does nothing for my odor issue. I've noticed that Nizoral has been mentioned several times on the forum, and both Nizoral and Clobex are equal in stature in terms for combating the problem that they are prescribe for, but again, it does not work for the odor.

I'm not sure what's causing my odor, as I am not sure what is causing a lot of the other things that I happening in my body. And I'm not saying that you shouldn;t continue trying to find out where the problem may be coming from. What I can say with confidence is that the Cortisone injection works.

I discoverted that when I finally went back to the uptown Derm that I use to see. I saw her again last October, after not seeing her for over a year. I told her about the odor, and I wasn't sure where it was coming from, but that it was really doing a number of my self-esteem. She felt for me and simply told me with the dermititis, that it is not uncommon to have odor problems. She whipped out her needle, and gave me a good amount of injections all over my head. the injection lasted for about a good two months before I needed another.

The Cortisone that she gave me was a very mild version, that it diluted with water. If for some reason anyone tries this, and finds that the shot does not work for them, go back to your derm, and ask them to give you slightly stronger dose.

I'd be shocked by anyone who gets the shot, and says it doesn't stop their odor problem COMPLETLEY. Not for just a few days, where you'll have to go back and wash your hair in 2-3days. I mean completley in terms of how long that shot lasts for everyone (which I would think would vary for different ppl.).

I truly hope this helps, and this isn't a cure, but a solution, that will atleast allow everyone to live a normal life, and use what ever product you'd like on your heads, without specifically looking for somthing to control the odor.
