dr redmond vs. sttm (Thyroid Conditions & Hair Loss)

Actually, according to the revised standards, a TSH of 3.5 IS hypothyroid. About 40 yrs ago, a TSH of 3.5 would have you treated with thyroid meds. However, in the early 1980's, doctors decided they were medicating too many people, that didn't really need it. So they changed the guidlines so that only a TSH over 4 was considered needing treatment. This has caused millions of people to go without treatment, when they do need it. I believe that the newer guidlines say anything over 2.5 is hypothyroid. But, many doctors either aren't up to date, or don't accept the newer guidelines. When I started having all my health issues, I had my thyroid tested several times, it came back around 3.8 or so, and they kept telling me I was fine, it was stress, my imagination, implied I was a hypochondriac, what many of you have experienced, I'm sure. So it went untreated, and I kept getting worse, along with the hair loss. Finally, I went to Dr. Redmond and he did diagnose my hypothyroid. But, no, he doesn't believe in, or treat adrenal fatigue. So the synthroid he put me on didn't help because, unbeknowst to me at the time, I had a bad adrenal problem. You need to treat the adrenal problem first, or sometimes along with they hypothyroid. Adrenal fatigue, too, used to be a diagnosed medical condition in the past, but today, very few doctors diagnose or treat it. I've read many things about that too, some feel that in the past, when it was treated, too many people were put on cortisol, at improper dosages and the side effects were not always good. Cortisol is tricky, too much can be very bad. So, its easier for doctors to just not treat it, unless you have addison's diease, which means you must have the cortisol because your body doesn't make any at all. With adrenal fatigue, your body makes some, but not enough. Adrenal problems often go hand in hand with thyroid issues. My current doctor said that I probably had undiagnosed hypothyroid for years, which, left untreated, stressed my adrenals so they couldn't function properly. Now I am getting proper treatment, but its taken years to get it diagnosed, meanwhile my body became more stressed trying to compensate for my hypothyroid, which just drained my adrenals. Do not listen when doctors tell you not to do your own research on the internet or anywhere else. It's YOUR body, only you have a personal interest in it. Granted, there is a lot of misinformation on the internet, and a lot of scams for miracle cures. But, I never would have found my adrenal and thyroid issues if I hadn't done my research. For the longest time, I took whatever a doctor said as gospel truth. I had told every doctor of my family history of hypothyroid but they still kept telling me there was nothing wrong. If I had caught the hypothyroid early enough, my adrenals might not have been compromised and I might not have spent 5 years of my youth struggling with health issues. A good doctor should want you to be informed.
