dr redmond vs. sttm (Thyroid Conditions & Hair Loss)
» Of course, everyone should see a doctor with any health problem, hair loss
» included. And believe me, I do not believe in "snake oil" remedies and the
» like. Having said that, let me briefly outline my history, so you can see
» another side to the adrenal fatigue issue. At age 20, I started taking the
» pill. Almost immediately, my hair began to fall out, and I started to feel
» extremely dizzy, moodiness, my periods ceased, my breasts got smaller,
» dehydration, low blood pressure, and I lost 10 lbs without dieting. I felt
» terrible, but the doctor told me keep taking them, so I did. The hair loss
» was getting really bad, I probably lost a good 25% of my hair, and this
» doctor kept telling me it was my imagination. Finally, she switched pills,
» but it didn't help. After switching pills a few times, with no success I
» went off them altogether, hoping to heal myself, since all my symptoms
» began after I started the pill. Unfortunately, neither my health issues or
» my hair improved. I was 22 years old, and feeling worse all the time. I
» felt like I was in a fog all the time, I couldn't think clearly. I went to
» all kinds of doctors, endocrinologists, gynecologists, internists,
» dermatologists. No one was any help at all, they just implied I was
» imagining it. So, I started doing my own research. I learned that my
» original gynecologist had put me on a pill made for premenopausal women,
» when I was 20 yrs old. I believe that started a chain reaction in my body
» that, 6 years later I have still not recovered completely from. I have a
» family history of thyroid problems, which of course I told all those
» doctors, but they all said my thyroid was just fine. Finally, I started to
» look outside of my health insurance network of doctors, since none of them
» were helping and I was getting sicker all the time. I went to Dr Redmond,
» he was sympathetic, and he found I was hypothyroid. That was the beginning
» of recovery for me, but the synthroid he gave me wasn't really making me
» feel any better, and my hair was still coming out. He wanted to put me back
» on the pill, which I did for a time, but the hair loss didn't stop. I felt
» that there must be something else they were missing. I did hours and hours
» of research into what could be wrong with me. Finally, when I read the
» symptoms of adrenal fatigue, I had so many of them, I thought that could be
» it. The low blood pressure is a common one, and there are many others,
» most of which I had. I went to a licensed MD in NYC who takes a holistic
» approach, he tested me for the adrenal problem. It seems that I had my
» undiagnosed hypothyroid, which was exacerbated by taking the bcp. As my
» thyroid tried to recover by itself, it strained my adrenals. The synthroid
» I was taking wasn't the right thyroid med. for me, as I had a reverse T3
» problem, which they never tested me for. (Its not on the standard thyroid
» panel, you have to get an expanded thyroid panel) Now, I am on cytomel and
» hydrocort. The way my dr. explained it to me, thyroid and adrenal problems
» often go hand in hand. So, I need to treat them both to recover. Many
» doctors will treat the adrenal problem first (those that actually believe
» adrenal fatigue exists) but my dr felt that I needed to treat both at
» first. I am starting to feel better, I can think so much more clearly now,
» I am not usually dizzy and my periods have returned. All I know is that I
» feel better. More than that I can't say, but I don't think adrenal fatigue
» does not exist. I went to so many doctors, and until I was diagnosed with
» the adrenal/thyroid problem, I was not getting any better. I lost 6 yrs of
» my 20's suffering from health issues, when I should have been taking good
» health for granted, like all my friends were. Don't misunderstand I am
» grateful that my health issues weren't cancer, or some other terminal
» disease. But I still feel that all those doctor could have tried harder to
» help me. Missing the hypothyroid was inexcusable. FInding a good doctor
» is the hardest part of any health and hair loss problem, in my opinion.
Good for you amye I'm glad you found someone who got to the bottom of your problem. So would you say that adrenal fatigue is a form of hypothyroidism? Has your HL improved?
