Effective treatment of female androgenic alopecia with dutasteride

J Drugs Dermatol. 2005 Sep-Oct;4(5):637-40

Dihydrotestosterone is the main molecule responsible for androgenic alopecia. Finasteride, which reduces transformation of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone and decreases dihydrotestosterone activity, is approved for treatment of androgenic alopecia in men. We describe the case of a 46-year-old woman with androgenic alopecia, non-responsive to minoxidil, who initially benefited from finasteride.

Due to only limited improvement after finasteride and persisting profound psychological distress resulting from androgenic alopecia, another 5-reductase inhibitor, dutasteride, was introduced. Clinical evaluation and trichogram were applied for assessment of dutasteride efficacy in this patient. Additionally, mean hair diameter was monitored by means of computer dermoscopy.

After 6 months of therapy, significant improvement was observed and after 9 months the clinical diagnosis of androgenic alopecia could no longer be made in this patient. No side effects were observed.

In conclusion, theoretical data and our experience in this case show that dutasteride might develop into a true alternative in treatment of androgenic alopecia.

» » » I am 32 years old and my hair has been thinning for the past year or
» so.
» » It
» » » all started with the birth of my third child. I knew all about the 4
» » month
» » » fall out but noticed I seemed to be losing much more hair than I did
» » with
» » » my other children. The hair loss seemed to come and go and I kept
» » thinking
» » » it must be stress. Three months ago I went to a dermatologist and
» » began
» » » spirolactone and rogaine (extra strength, men's version) Ofcourse, I
» » know
» » » it is too early for any results, but the shedding is still going on
» and
» » it
» » » is so hard to deal with. I dread washing my hair and just can't
» » believe
» » » this is really happening. My dermatologist did not do a scalp test,
» » but
» » » said she would treat me the same way whether or not it was AGA. Bad
» » news
» » » for me is that my mom has AGA so it is in the genes. Although, she
» did
» » not
» » » start experiencing hair loss until her 50's. I have had my thyroid
» » tested
» » » and that seems fine.
» » »
» » » Mentally, this is the hardest thing I have ever dealt with. I am
» » depressed
» » » and sad. My husband is supportive but it is hard for him to
» understand.
» » » Although, my friends can't tell yet, I CAN! My ponytail seems half of
» » what
» » » it used to be and new growth is thin. With every hair that is shed,
» I
» » feel
» » » I am that much closer to losing it all. I have 3 beautiful children
» » and
» » » some days I just don't know how I can live the rest of my life like
» » this. I
» » » want to be active in their lives, but don't see that happening if the
» » hair
» » » loss continues. Is there anything that really works? I want
» to
» » be
» » » hopeful, but it seems that so much you read is not very reassuring.
» I
» » know
» » » it is important to act right away, how do I know I am doing the right
» » » thing?
» »
» » The rogaine and the spiro definately should help!!!!!!!!You caught this
» so
» » early.
» » The rogaine may make you shed worse for a few months, try not to be
» » alarmed...but you will be.
» »
» » The spiro should slow the progression of the thinning on an internal
» level
» » as it loweres androgen levels.
» »
» » Hang in there
»
» Thank you for the support. Yesterday was a good day and my shedding
» seemed to be better, I am hoping for more and more of those days. I am
» curious about avodart. Are people seeing more results with that medicine?
» Are there too many side effects? I know there is a risk if you were to get
» pregnant, but I have 3 little ones and our family is definitly complete.
