fluctuating ferritin and thyroid (Thyroid Conditions & Hair Loss)

There are three main causes of low ferritin in women-

1. Excessive bleeding during periods
2. Loss of blood in the gut
3. Low iron content in the diet

Though endoscopy can find out internal bleeding in the gut, there are a few conditions where special tests are needed. For example celiac disease can cause iron deficiency. Endoscopy may not show anything obvious inside. You can discuss with your GE specialist regarding this.

Regarding the hemoccult test certain precautions are to be taken (http://www.gihealth.com/html/education/hemoccult.html)for the results to be appropriate.

» I just got back from a new endo. He seems open minded and I liked him a
» lot. His wife is a derm, so they can combine efforts if necessary. I had
» copies of my blood tests from the last two years and I pointed out that my
» ferritin has gone from 53 in 2006 to 45 in 2007 to 25 a month ago. He was
» concerned about the downward trend and told me he wants me to see GI in
» case there is some internal bleed of some sort. I had a colonoscopy a year
» ago and it was normal. I also had a hemocult done when GYN did my pap. Now
» he has me freaked out that there is some internal bleeding of some sort.
» Have any of you had a downward fluctuation with your ferritin? If so, what
» did your doc say? Honestly, there is no peace of mind with this issue!!!!
» BTW, he thinks my thyroid is a definite part of the problem. Since I don't
» have any male hormonal shifts (from exam, not bloodwork) he really thinks
» my thyroid has been overtreated in the past and he has dropped my dose. He
» wants to see me once a week for a few months. At least SOMEONE is trying to
» follow this hair issue. I'm grateful for that. But, we'll see how it goes.
» Any thoughts on the decreasing ferritin levels would be appreciated. Thanks
» guys!
