Just want to share with everyone an email I received. This might be helpful to those experiencing scalp pain. According to this reader, SLS free and propylene free shampoo stopped the scalp pain forher.

Hello,

I am a 24 year old woman experiencing a very weird form of hair loss. It started with just a thin patch in high school and has gotten worse since. The hair in my bangs and the very top of the 2 sides of my head is super thin. The quantity seems normal, but the hairs themselves are almost invisible. The hair everywhere else are normal (still fine, but not baby fine).

I used to get horrible pain in the thinning areas until I stopped using shampoos with SLS and propylene glycol. That got rid of the pain immediately! Also, in the last few years my hair has become incredibly oily and I have to wash it everyday. It's not just an 'ew, I feel dirty' oily...it's more like my hair will stick to my scalp. I used to go days without washing my hair! I should mention the oiliness predates the natural shampoos. I also get this weird build up at the base of my hair shaft. It's hard to describe, but there are tiny hard 'grains' that I can scratch/pick off from the base of the hair (dried sebum?) and sometimes a thin layer of buildup. (gross, I know) The buildup is especially bad on the top of my head where it is thin. I don't use any styling products at all and haven't for a long time.

I have been tested for thyroid disorder and anemia, but my results are normal. My derm suggested I go on rogaine, but that's not really doing much and the propylene glycol sometimes itches. I really think the weird buildup, oiliness, and the hard grains might have something to do with the hair loss.
I know there are worse things in life, but I hate that I have to be careful that a chunk of scalp won't show every time I put my hair up. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or can direct me to someone who has heard of this.

Thank you in advance,
