Wig Newbie! (Hair Replacement Systems & Extensions)

» 1) How do you attatch the wig?
»
» Men are often totally bald or so thin they just shave off what's left on
» top, i still have most of my hair it is just very thinned/more see through
» in places ie hairline/midscalp, but i certainly wouldn't consider shaving
» it bald to wear a wig!

Cannot answer how a full wig is attached, but if you have a fair bit of hair and do not want to shave it for a cosmetic "solution", then as you rightly pointed out...go for the topper approach!

» 2) Should i be looking at what is called a 'topper' rather than a 'full
» wig' because my loss is only on top not on the sides/back?

Yup, that's what i did. I have a handmade topper sitting at the bottom of my wardrobe. Currently i am wearing hair extensions from Lucinda Ellerys salon in Hammersmith, which doesnt help top hair loss, but given i never wear mine down, i scrunch it and put it up in a clip to give the illusion of volume.

» 3) Do i definitely need a 'lace front' if i am to pull my hair back/show
» hairline?

I dont quite know about lace fronts.

» 4)Should the wig base be all lace or part poly?

Again, i havent come accross these terms in my topper research.

» 5) Can i get a wig/system that i can maintain/take off regularly myself or
» do i have to sign up for a hair club type salon? Can it be bonded for
» extended wear ie weeks at a time?

That is what i have - a topper for occassional wear. Although i've never worn it yet but had it for 3 months now, i got it for those gruelling occasions where i darent go in my usual hair clip up mode. So yes toppers for occassional or daily wear exist.

Toppers can also be bonded but need re-positions/washing etc every 6 weeks.

» 6) I have come across on-line suppliers of systems that seem to cater more
» for men are they a good idea for women?

Cannot comment. Never used online to order cosmetic hair pieces.

» 7) I am based in the UK can anyone suggest some reputable on-line
» companies and/or high street salons i could research/consult with?

I'm not sure where you are based, but for hair extensions that dont cause damage i would go to Lucinda Ellery's in London. For topper customising, i would go to Bloomsbury wigs - also in London.

» Sorry for so many questions but any help on these basic would be so good.
» I should say i have tried cover-up products like dermatch etc but think i
» need extensions/wig/topper now as thinning has worsened.

I understand - my thinning is all over the crown area, that's why i got the topper made up.

» Thanks to all :-) Gem.

Good luck. If you want any more info, just shout.
