can diet cause 1 1/2 years of on going hair loss? (Diet & Hair Loss)

» This is only my opinion but I think certain diets can trigger hair loss. I
» have heard of Atkins patients losing hair and I was on a diet for several
» months right before my hair loss started. It was not Atkins but it was a
» high protein low carb type of diet. I had also cut out red meat for 6
» months before my hair loss started. I think it played some role in my
» case.

» I will say that I have lost a very large amount of weight within a two
» week period (after giving birth) and I experienced no hair loss at all.

Four years ago, I did the Atkins diet and lost about 10 pounds in 4 weeks. The diet was really tough on me and I did not keep it up. Also during this time, I decided to try Seasonale birth control pills. Around two-three months after this, I began losing hair. It has been ongoing ever since. I have seen 2 dermatologists and my pcp. Unfortunatley, since I don't have a life-threatening condition and I get the feeling they don't really care. I was told I didn't have thyroid problems, to cut my hair short, it's in my genes (my grandfather was bald) and use Rogaine. The Rogaine did not really help except for making my eyelashes grow and starting to get a really great mustache! Because of this I stopped the Rogaine.

The reports I have heard about hair being dead hold true for me. I used to never have to use conditioner. I now have to use mounds of it to get a brush through my hair while hoping what I have got stays intact. It is very disheartening. I never thought of myself as a vain person, but the thought of being bald woman by 40 sincerely disturbs me. I have pretty much given up. I haven't been to see a doctor about this condition in 1 1/2 years. I mention it my ob/gyn, who is the only doctor who has seemed halfway interested in my problem, but she just says my hair doesn't look bad. Well it does. It is lifeless and won't do anything. I am embarrased to wear a ponytail anymore because it looks so pitiful. My mother recently told me my hairline is receding.

I now eat a normal diet. I have gained about 5 of the 10 pounds back that I lost. After reading these posts, I am going to start faithfully taking my vitamins and biotin suppplements (does this help? haven't heard anyone mention this).

Sorry for the long posting and it is outdated. I just decided to start reading about this and see if there was anything I could do own my own.
