Hysterectomy and hair loss (Menopause, Peri-menopause & Hair Loss)

posted by delilah, 29.10.2008, 07:05

» I've been reading the posts on this forum, and now I'm really confused.
» Although it's good to find that I am not alone in hair loss hell.
»
» I had a hysterectomy (partial - left the ovaries) about 13 years ago. My
» ovaries quit about 5 years after and the doctor said my numbers indicated I
» was in true menopause. I was really not hot on the standard HRT idea (even
» before the big tests results were published) so I spent several years
» having terrible hot flashes and night sweats and lumpy, tender breasts
» until I could find an OB willing to prescribe compounded natural hormone
» creams for me. I used a natural progesterone cream regularly for years -
» it did wonders for the hot flashes and the breast tenderness. Then my
» doctor left the state and it took me about 4 months to find another willing
» to NOT give me standard HRT.
» That was when it hit. I'd been off my progesterone cream for several
» months, and suddenly my hair was just falling out like crazy. I had no
» idea what was happening or why. When I got back on my cream, it eventually
» slowed, but never returned to normal. I suspect another issue was that I
» had been strenuously dieting and was taking in far too little protein. I've
» had a fair amount of shedding now for the last 3 or 4 years. I used to
» have thick bangs, but now the hair is so thin in front it just looks
» silly.
» It seems to be TE as it falls out all over my head and the hairs do have
» the white bulb at the end, but it also could be female pattern balding as
» the hair in front on either side is the thinnest. I am having regrowth,
» there are short hairs all over my head, but it can't keep up with the fall
» out.
» My big question now is - do I keep up with the progesterone cream or just
» use the estrogen? If I use the estrogen too often, my breasts just kill
» me. Even though I'm using the creams, my hair is still falling out too
» fast. I've been considering a DHT blocker, but the options out there all
» have nasty side effects.
» Oh, I also noticed that while I was on vitamin supplements (heavy B's,
» zinc, magnesium) my hair loss did slow down. When I stopped them for a
» while, I had massive fall out again.
» I spoke to my compounding pharmacist, and he said no one really knows
» about all this because the big pharmaceutical companies won't profit from
» the research if vitamins and natural hormones are the answer. God, I'm
» frustrated! None of the doctor's I've spoken to seem to know ANYTHING.

It you don't have a uterus you don't need the progesterone cream. Do you know what dose of estrogen cream you're on? Maybe you should switch to the Vivelle dot (which is also bioidentical) so that you can get a more consistent dosage of the estrogen.
