Antiandrogens (Androgenetic Alopcia (AGA) Female Pattern)

posted by HairSite Admin, 26.01.2009, 07:21

Antiandrogens

There are three antiandrogens that may be used in FPHL that are approved in various countries for various indications.

For example, spironolactone is approved in the USA as a diuretic for the treatment of hypertension and in Australia as a treatment for hirsutism;

flutamide is approved in the USA as a treatment for prostate cancer in combination with a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone; and

cyproterone acetate is unavailable in the USA but is approved in Britain as a treatment for acne and hirsutism.

Each has its own advantages and disadvantages in the treatment of FPHL with multicenter controlled comparative efficacy trials lacking in this disorder.

All can cause feminization of a male fetus in a pregnant woman taking the drug and thus an effective means of contraception must be in place at the time of initiating treatment with one of these drugs and for the
duration of therapy.
