Discrepancies may arise because of differences in pulling strength, and in the density or thickness of hair shafts. The pull test is a very rough method and difficult to standardize, as it is subject to high interindividual variation among investigators. The pulling force is not distributed uniformly all over the whole hair bundle, which creates variation from one hair to another. It seems to be useful only in acute phases of hair loss in the more severe conditions.
