Update on my TE - 5 months- long sorry! (Telogen Effluvium)

posted by Sarah22, 01.10.2009, 15:11

I thought I would check in (since I still obsessively check this forum every day, but not many people post anymore- in case there are those like me who still read)

I have just finished my 5th month of what (I still hope) is TE from discontinuing/switching birth control.

The shed continues. I still lose more than I ever did before this happened, although it may be less than at the beginning of the TE. I don't count hairs as much anymore, and I took the hair catcher out of the shower drain, just for my sanity.

What is more annoying is the continued SCALP ITCHING. It is sometimes constant- more now than at the beginning. I have not found any shampoo or anything else that helps. Has anyone found anything to relieve this? I think I would be much more sane if my head would stop itching and constantly reminding me that my hair is falling out.

Some days I feel depressed, hopeless and helpless, thinking about the "what ifs" if this is actually AGA or if this doesn't stop. However, I do do try to remain hopeful.

I know some doctors say the shed can last 6 months, and have read on the internet that it can last 6-8 also. I remain hopeful that the end may be near.

I also have regrowth, which is encouraging- it just isn't enough to keep up with the shedding. but it IS there, and it seems healthy. I can see it sticking up after I shower and blow-dry. What is most encouraging is that my temples have filled in a bit, so that I can now wear my hair in a ponytail without feeling too self-conscious. The temples were the first area where I noticed hair loss, so it seems encouraging that they are the first area I notice significant regrowth. Do you think this is a good sign?

What scares me the most is the fact that my hair got lighter while I was on birth control for over a year. It went from medium brown to light brown/red. I liked the color change, so I didn't stress- until it started to fall out. I just feel like this is a bad omen. I am hoping regrowth is closer to my original brown color.

Hang in there,
xx Sarah
