But why is it happening? (Hair & Scalp Odor Problem)

posted by Betsy, 05.11.2006, 17:56

Hello Smelly Head, I hear you. My hair has always been very plentiful and beautiful. I get compliments all the time. It is my best feature also! I have a few theories I'm going to throw out at you. I've always used sls shampoos also. However I've always had super sensitive skin. I use All Free and Clear for laundry, Dermassage for dishes or my hands were a mess. Even certain soaps didn't do my skin well...

Also, I've always had yeast problems such as nail fungus (not bad, but it is there), and staph problems such as an occasional boil. As I understand it, these problems will plague me off and on as the yeast has no cure (except the pills which my doctor says have too many risks associated with them and the fungus will come back after a while anyway). He treats the staph with topical antibiotics. So I was using a prescription anti-fungal shampoo (sls of course)
and after shampooing he had me putting the antibiotic ointment on my scalp while my hair was still wet. This helped me for 6 hours or so and then the odor would come back.

Then someone on this forum wrote in that she had had the same problem and had been delivered of the problem by using the Jason Dandruff...I was skeptical but thought I'd try it anyway. I was shocked and thrilled that this worked for me. I have put two and two together and realized that the sls is very harsh (and I'm sensitive to everything anyway) and just as the doctor's regime worked for a few hours, my scalp was so damaged it could not heal itself from the damage and was suseptible (sp?) to the bacterial and fungal stuff right away again.

These are my theories why the sls free shampoos seem to work. I understand it takes the scalp a long time to truly heal after we have damaged the folicles for such a long time. The farther I stay away from the sls, sles, als, ales shampoos, the better my scalp feels. I think there are so many people out there with this same problem and the industry for the most part hasn't been aware of the problem.

I'm afraid to put any color on my hair anymore and have realized I have really bad reactions to hairsprays also...they break my forehead out in a rash.

I will be very surprised if you don't find relief from the Jason Dandruff shampoo. Use it for 3 months exclusively with a conditioner. Conditioners do not have sls in them. I tried to keep the conditioner off of my scalp as much as possible. Then gradually use the Jojoba shampoo. I still use the Jason Dandruff shampoo once a week. Don't know if I need to but the bottle says to use it that way, as does every medicated shampoo. I think the fungal problem is always ready to resurface if you aren't careful, it is in our systems. I know people in the past have tried antibiotics orally and it didn't seem to have a lasting effect. It is very unhealthy to take them all the time. But if the scalp is healthy you won't have the bacterial problem anyway. ;-)

I'm anxious to hear how you are doing. Please give updates.
