dermatologist appointment (Support Forum & Misc Topics)

I am learning a lot about hair loss through necessity, but there's so much I don't know. Some of the people who used to post here were so much more knowledgeable, but I don't see them here anymore. That's probably a good thing, I like to think that they've resolved their hair loss problem and have moved on to enjoying their lives. The lack of doctors knowledgeable in hair loss is frustrating. Dr. Redmond's latest book is good, though. I read it and that's what made me go see him. "The Hormonally Vulnerable Woman" and it does explain the role women's hormones have in hair loss and other things. He's probably a good doctor, if your problem can be fixed with yasmin and spiro. And, many people do find that helps. I guess the problem with him and most doctors is their inabililty to look beyond the hair loss, and find out what is causing it. It only makes sense that with any condition, you find out what the cause is. Dr. Ash told me on my first visit, that all my health complaints were symptoms of an underlying cause. A basic, common sense concept, yet he was the first doctor to mention this. Most doctors just want to find the quick fix, they don't want to bother doing too much diagnostic work, other than order blood work. Not that blood tests aren't important, but they don't always give you the whole picture. My adrenal fatigue was discovered through a saliva test, which many mainstream dr's don't believe in. There is a test for complete adrenal failure, but it does not indicate anything if your adrenals are only partially functioning, it would show up as normal if they aren't completely non-functioning. That was one of my problems, my adrenals were probably fatigued for years, and I didn't know it. So, I couldn't take any steps to remedy it. Meanwhile, that led to other problems. I think, what happened to me was this: I went away to college and was very unhappy and homesick. This caused a great deal of stress, which can tax the adrenals. Then, I went on a bcp that was completely wrong for me, and stayed on it for a while. The problems began then, and I tried switching pills, going off them, going back on. This caused my hormones to become very unbalanced. It was a snowball effect from there, the adrenals could not help my body to produce normal female hormones, I lost hair, developed hypoglycemia, hypotension, dehydration, low stomach acid, lack of menstruation. brain fog, malabsorption. But, I didn't know what was wrong, and no doctors could help me. So, it got progressively worse. I think I am finally on the right path to health, but I am impatient because I've spent 4 yrs losing hair and feeling like s--t. I know it will take time to recover, and I hope I am on the right track. I think I am but if only my hair would stop falling out. I am angry that all the doctors I've seen were basically of little help. But, I can deal with the fact that I've lost 4 yrs of good health and 1/2 my hair, as long as I am finally on my way back to normal. It's too soon to tell yet, I do feel a lot better, and I know it takes a while for hair to respond. Sorry to bore you with my long tale of woe, but maybe someone else will recognize some of these symptoms in themselves, and hopefully it will help them find answers to their own hair loss dilemma. I'd like to help someone, to find something positive out of the experience. (Sorry this is so long!)
