Also: Treatment for Pain and Itching (Scalp Pain, Tight Scalp)

posted by Ann K, 11.03.2007, 15:47

I forgot to say another thing that helped a lot was washing my hair in the sink first with very cool water, then I would take a shower....even lukewarm shower water was causing me to get itchy. Actually, showering first, then sink washing would probably be the best because the head would get cooled down. Soemtimes I have found it helpful to do that at the end of the day...run cold water on my head....no washing....then air drying. I found that washing every other day for a period helped too, but now I do it every day.

And I started oral spiro again to protect my hair because I have no idea when I will be able to tolerate a scalp me. Once I reached 50mg/day, I noticed a big reduction in my scalp redness too.

» I have AGA with an AA variant. I was on topical meds for my loss and I
» added a 2% ketaconazole shampoo to my regime in November. I accidently
» used it 5 days in a row when I had the flu and it started this terrible
» allergic reaction in my scalp. I had pain, redness, itching and I had
» never experienced this before in my life. I went to my scalp derm. and she
» prescribed doxycycline and unfortunately I had a terrblie allergic reaction
» to it which I am sure aggravated my scalp condition. Then she gave me
» prednsione and doxepin. I find the prednisone helped the pain and the
» doxepin helped the itching. It has strong anti-histiminc properties. The
» prednisone was the last resort because my scalp was not calming down. I
» have been on the pred. and dox. for ~2 months and am slowly taping off the
» pred. as they monitor the side effects. It has been awful and I cannot use
» any medication for AGA on my head, but at least I am not in pain
» constantly now. I have also gained 10 pounds from the 2 medications.
»
» I have also found if I use 0.1% Cloderm + Elidel together at night once a
» day topically, it keeps the redness at bay until I wash the next a.m.
»
» Also, I have only been using my dryer on Cool or air drying my hair. That
» has helped immensely and I figured out the small area I always had on my
» head that never really grew that well, was where I pointed my hair dryer
» when I used to use the Medium Hot setting. My dr. always thought that spot
» was AA, but it was from the heat from the dryer!
»
» I hope this info could be useful.
