ferrtin (Support Forum & Misc Topics)
I went to a derm recently, in my never ending quest for a solution to this nightmare. He diagnosed TE, but ran some blood work. I specifically asked him to check my ferritin, because in the past, doctors have only checked iron. A few days later he got the lab results back and told me that everything looked fine. I asked for a copy, which I just received. My ferritin was 29, and this derm told me that everything looks fine. Do they even read these lab reports? Well, I know from this board, you need at least 40 to maintain hair, and at least 70 to regrow it. I need to increase my iron and I'd like to know the best supplements to take. Right now, I take many vitamins and supplements for my adrenal problem, but none of them have much iron in them. I wanted to wait until I got the labs back before I started taking iron. Also, I read that I should take lysine along with the iron, as it helps the body to absorb the iron better. Any suggestions as to what to buy, how much to take? By the way, this is a good example of why you need to get copies of your labs. Don't assume, if a doctor tells you everything is fine, that it really is. If I hadn't gotten a copy of the labs for myself, I would have assumed my ferritin was fine. Unfortunately, this hair loss experience has taught me that you can't rely on doctors, you have to educate yourself and be pro-active in treating hair loss and other health issues..
