Getting
the Hair Color of your Choice
Let's face it, no matter
what you do, you never get the hair color that is showing on the box. A
hair colorist can help to a significant extent, but that is by no means
fool proof. Hair color is very much an art as much as it is a complex
technical subject. Here let's find out how you can get the hair color of
your choice - the technical way.
BLONDE
This is the most popular hair color and yet the most difficult to
achieve well. Blonde usually involves the use of bleach and it is highly
recommended that you go to a professional hair colorist. Doing it
yourself at home could be dangerous. Hair bleaches chemically alter the
melanin granule in the middle layer of each hair strand. It is known
that consistent bleaching can damage healthy strong hair shafts. For
people who want to lighten brown hair to blonde, the dyes must first
seep through the red and the orange tint in order to get to yellow. This
is the 3 major levels in lightening hair: from red to orange to yellow.
The reason why most lightening jobs do not turn out well is because most
dyes do not have enough strength to get the hair past the red and orange
levels, thus leaving the hair reddish looking.
UNDESIRABLE RED
TONES
Undesirable red tones are common for those trying to bleach their hair
blonde. This also happens a lot to brunettes who try to lighten their
hair. The general rule is that the darker your natural color is, the
more likely that your hair will go RED. The reason is that darker hair
always contains a higher level of red pigmentation and they are more
likely to show when you try to lighten them. Undesirable red tones are
also more prone to occur when permanent hair dyes are used. This may
have something to do with the added chemicals in permanent hair dyes.
To prevent unwanted red tones, we suggest that you always stick within
one shade of your natural hair color. If your natural color is medium
brown, try light brown. This will yield a much better results than if
you were to go for anything lighter. The red tones will less likely
appear. In addition, ash tones will eliminate the warmth in your hair.
Stay away from shades of gold as they will enhance the red and orange
tint.
DARKEN YOUR HAIR
Try to stay away from permanent dyes. Permanent dyes are for lightening
and camouflaging stubborn gray hair. The will oxidize and fade in no
time. Stick with semi-permanent dyes. They do a much better job
darkening hair and with less chemicals than the permanent dyes, they
turn out more naturally.
THE RESULTS
ARE NOT EVEN
It is not uncommon to see that the hair color does not "wash
out" evenly all over your hair. Sometimes the results are sporadic.
This happens more often to people whose hair has been constantly permed,
colored, bleached, straightened or damaged. If you have split ends or
damaged hair, your hair is more likely to have a coarse surface under
the microscope. Hair with coarse surface is more prone to absorb
everything that it comes in contact with. A strand of hair that is
saturated with all kinds of chemicals is less likely to yield good
results from a hair coloring job, since the hair is already fully loaded
with chemicals and dyes from previous treatments. The easiest way to
remedy the problem is to stay away from any chemicals and hair dyes for
a while. Give your regular hot oil treatments or various deep
conditioning regimens would help too.
