Topical – Fluridil Updates.
“3.5 months and still going. Im not at a point yet where i can
access its efficacy, but i can say that it doesnt cause me any
problems other than slight dryness of my hair, and i believe that only
became a problem when i started applying it in the morning right after
my hair became fully dry out of the shower, and let it sit in all day
until the next morning. Otherwise it somehow makes my hair look even
better after i apply it. I would say with confidence my hair line has
continued to subtly slip back despite its application, but thats
pretty expected with any hair loss product.”

Topical / Reference – Liposomes vs traditional delivery mechanisms.
“A liposome has the same basic structure as a cell's membrane(fatty
acids). This means that once in touch with a membrane it
"melts" with it introducing its content inside the cell. So
the medicine is not wasted but gets cleanly inside the cell and thus is
a much better approach to just put in the skin surface and hope it will
get inside somehow. In addition as it doesn't contain anything that can
irritate the skin it has more benefits over alcohol-based products.”

The Expanding Needle method. Official announcement: improvement in
body hair transplant procedures. With this method, punches are no

can be extracted from an opening that is actually smaller than the
diameter of the graft lower down. Sometimes less than 50%. The
extraction sites are thus customized to the actual spread of the
graft as it emerges from the skin.

I have been using Alpecin Shampoo and After Shampoo Liquid for about 2.5
months. I was having a pretty good shed and it stopped it immediately.
Without question it has made my vellus hair at the temple/hairline go
termial. I have tried everything to make these hairs go terminal and I
think this is finally doing the trick. I'm not sure about any regrowth
yet because its very difficult to tell if the terminal hairs are coming
in are all from the vellus I had or are simply new. I am finally on my
way from a NW 2 to a NW 1. This is terrific news!

– Telomerase.
The finding is surprising because telomerase is well known in a quite
different context, protecting against tumors by limiting the number of
times a cell can divide. The new findings put the enzyme astride two
major biological pathways, one that promotes the growth of new cells for
maintaining tissues and the other that prevents the excessive growth
that leads to tumors. Telomerase is an enzyme known to serve as a
last-ditch defense against cancer also activates adult stem cells, which
the body uses to repair its tissues. The insight could lead to new
treatments for certain diseases, possibly even promoting hair growth in
animals other than mice.

Hair Multiplication – Cultured Fibroblast as a
Treatment for Hair Loss
Fibroblasts works by stimulating hair protein
production using a patient's own cells. The treatment begins with the
injection of a local anaesthetic to numb a small section of skin/hair
follicles at the back of the head. This area was chosen because of its
genetic print and the invisibility of any scarring. After approximately
six weeks, 1 to 1.5 ml of cultured fibroblasts are sent back to the
doctor for injection into the patient's pate.

Topical – Minoxidil opinions.
Minoxidil was and is a high blood pressure medication (in pill form
called Loniten). Minoxidil was found to grow hair only after it had been
on the market as a high blood pressure medication for many years. Very
little of the minox applied TOPICALLY will be absorbed into the
bloodstream and it should have little, if any, systemic effects (rapid,
irregular heart rate, etc.). Minox does not interfere in any way with
DHT. Studies suggest that very little of the topically-applied minoxidil
actually penetrates the skin - even less likely is penetration to the
point of absorption into the bloodstream.

hair look and feel better, it made it look thicker and healthier, but it
did not "grow" hair, and so far the jury is still out on
eucapil.

All Natural – Beta-Sitosterol & HDL cholesterol value
Beta-sis lowers the bad cholesterol (LDL) and the good one (HDL). And
this is the problem. Normally the LDL should be low and the HDL should
be very high, because HDL lowers the bad cholesterol (LDL). Now If you
take beta-sis this lowers both and HDL cant lower the bad one. Nobody
knows what happened if you takes Beta-sis in higher dosage for some
years. It could be that after stopping beta-sis HDL never come to the
default level where it can lower the bad one.

for about 8 months with good results. But after getting gyno from
propecia after 6 years of use and having to have surgery to remove it. I
think I will have to stop using fluridil. Dont know if it can give you
gyno but don’t want to take that chance.”

All Natural – Flex Seed Oil, improving absorption
Based on these observations, Dr. Budwig began treating her patients by
giving them a combination of high quality flax seed oil, which is rich
in Omega3 oil, and quark, which is something similar to cottage cheese
or yogurt in that it is rich in high quality protein. The reason for the
mixture of the oil with a high quality protein is that by combining the
protein with the oil, the oil becomes water soluble in the body and can
be absorbed more readily. It can enter the smallest capillaries,
dissolving any of the undesirable fats and cleaning out the veins and
arteries. It also strengthens the heart, dissolves tumors and cures
arthritis. It sounds like a lot, but it really works.

Reference – Role of TGF-beta2 in the human hair cycle.
“These lines of evidence strongly suggest the presence of a
"catagen cascade" in male pattern baldness, involving: (1) the
conversion of testosterone to DHT by type II 5-alpha-reductase; (2) the
synthesis of TGF-beta2 in dermal papilla cells; and (3) the activation
of the intrinsic caspase network.”
“TGF-beta2 triggers the intrinsic caspase network and subsequently
epithelial cells are eliminated through apoptotic cell death. TGF-beta
antagonists are effective in preventing catagen-like morphological
changes and in promoting elongation of hair follicles in vivo and in
vitro.”

Reference – Fibrosis & TFG (transforming growth factors)
CTGF is well known for its role as a downstream mediator of the chronic
fibrotic effects of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta).
Activated by TGF-beta, CTGF induces specialized cells called fibroblasts
to become myofibroblasts that deposit layers of collagen, which help
form a scar. In fibrosis, the formation of scar tissue occurs faster
than collagen is naturally broken down. This causes normal tissue to be
replaced by scar tissue.

that regular use of shampoo may even slow down futher hairloss; after 4

Study
”The gene for the androgen receptor lies on the x
chromosome. Men always inherit the x chromosome from their mother. In
many cases men therefore take after their grandfather on their mother's
side rather than their father. However, this defect is not simply caused
by one gene: "We have indications that other genes are involved
which are independent of the parents' sex," Prof. Nöthen stresses.
The hereditary defect can therefore sometimes also be passed on directly
from father to son.

Reference – TGFb1, what does it do ?
TGFb1 acts primarily as an on/off switch for cell multiplication and
differentiation. TGFb1 regulates the receptors for IGF-1 and PDGFBB.
Cell proliferation activated by other growth factors or biologic effects
of hormones is mediated by TGFb1. TGFb1 plays an important role in the
cell division and differentiation in the areas of bone development and
repair, cartilage growth and repair, blood cell development, fat cell
development, and muscle cell specialization. It also is necessary for
skin cell formation, and immune Tlymphocyte cell division. Thus tissue
repair, immune function and regulation of inflammatory conditions all
require TGFb1.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Cole: One of the Best Crown Restoration
Results with Only 700 grafts. This Norwood 5a – 6 presented his case to
Dr. Cole back in 1997. At that time Dr. Cole was one of a small group of
hair restoration surgeons performing total microscopic follicular unit
hair transplantation. The patient followed-up with two more surgeries in
early 2004 – one a microscopic FUT strip session for the frontal and
mid sections and the other a 700 graft FIT/FUE procedure to address the
crown. This is one of the best documented case of crown restoration
utilizing only 700 grafts.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Arvind: In-depth discussion about grafts
placement and angulation in the recipient site. It is possible to get
follicular unit grafts and still not get natural looking results in the
recipient areas. It will be helpful to know why that may happen so that
patients, in conjunction with their doctors, can avoid such a scenario.
This is an excellent illustration by Dr. Arvind showing where and how
the angles of the recipient sites change as one proceeds from the
hairline to the temples.

nice camouflage in the donor site.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Umar: Body Hair Transplant Methodology:
Anagen Hair Selection. Some Body hair transplant (BHT) practitioners
have already adopted in their methodology, the harvesting of only
actively growing hair for BHT purposes. This idea is premised on the
supposition that even more anagen hair would be derived for
transplantation by this approach. The popular modality used to achieve
this has entailed so far, shaving the body donor area several days
before harvesting. We conducted a cursory study to put this assumption
to the test.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Arvind: FUE Donor Sites, Up Close &
Personal Using Donor Sealant Technique. This discussion focuses on the appearance
of the donor areas where Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) has been
performed and the Donor Sealant protocol has been followed.
Different scenarios have been presented:
1. the donor area has been
shaved (hair being 1 mm or less)
2. the grafts/FUs have been densely extracted. 20-30 FUs have been
extracted per sq cm.
The following issues are discussed:
1. Appearance, or otherwise, of hypopigmented dots.
2. Appearance, or otherwise, of empty spaces but no white dots.
3. Contrast with the hair density in the surrounding areas.
4. The distance from where any anomaly (dots, spaces, contrast) is
visible and the distance at which it stops manifesting itself.

after his initial procedure of only 400 FUE grafts into the temple
areas. Here is a classic example of the “less is more” phenomenon
and it also shows FIT/FUE results on a African-American patient. These
grafts were extracted via Dr. Cole’s FIT/FUE method and, as usual,
they have matured beautifully and healthily. This is a good example of
what can be achieved when excellent hair characteristics meet
ultra-refined surgical techniques. A former Norwood class 3a, this
patient now enjoys a more flattering but still age-appropriate hairline.

These results imply that topical application of the herbal mixture

Hair Transplant - Dr. Arvind: How Donor Sealing Works in FUE
Donor Sites? The reason behind the success of donor sealing is that 1.
It returns the pigment bearing cells back to the donor sites where they
are required to avoid appearance of 'white dots'. 2. It helps in
promoting healing of the extraction sites by making "healing by
primary intention" possible.
In the FUSE extraction sites, since the wounds are round and close and
many in number, traditional methods of healing by primary intention are
not possible (except in the donor exchange method). Therefore, the
extraction site will heal by collagen formation from the dermis upwards.
This collagen is white in color and is responsible for the "white
dots".
Donor sealing creates a virtual seal of pigment bearing epidermis on top
of each of the extraction sites. The surrounding epidermis, joins the
donor sealant to provide "healing by primary intention".
The deeper dermal layers do heal by secondary intention and do form
collagen, but the pigmented epidermis on top of the extraction site
makes sure that the collagen tissue remains below and is not visible.

The crown was not grafted either. Patient was quite satisfied with the

that were on the hair line. The patient now returns to Dr. Cole to
remove many other large grafts from the hairline and to build a new

Hair Transplant - Dr. Arvind: First
Ever Donor Exchange method Performed on Topjimmy. The Donor Exchange
Method appears as a logical course to follow for those who : 1. People
who do not wish to use body hair over the bald recipient sites but have
a degree of hairloss that is too severe to fill with the scalp donor
hair alone. For these individuals this avenue opens the possibility of
harvesting the scalp donor areas to a greater extent while still
minimizing chances of visible thinning in the back of the scalp. 2.
People who may have very thin and fine body hair growth. These
individuals may like to use the very thin/fine hair in the scalp donor
sites rather than the recipient/bald areas. The first patient to have
such a procedure performed, albeit in a very limited way is a forum
member- TopJimmy.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Arvind: Shaving
the Donor Site prior to Body Hair Transplant Procedures. According to
Dr. Arvind, shaving the donor areas to get the actively growing hair is
one of the keys to improved yield. This discussion attempts to analyze
the reasons for efficacy of shaving. What if one were not to shave the
donor areas? 1. Will it lead to the same yield/results albeit over a
longer duration? 2. If yes, than what should be the extra time that will
be required to notice most of the transplanted hair to start growing? 3.
If no, should shaving the body donor areas be considered an
important/essential requirement of body hair transplant. 4. In a patient
where, for some reason, the body donor hair could not be shaved, is
there an alternative way to determine which hair are the telogen/non
growing hair?

As we all know beta-sitosterol is the active ingredient in saw palmetto.
It seems to be a well-known fact that beta-sitosterol is 3000 times more

pygeum, stinging nettles, etc, when beta-sitosterol is more powerful?
Also, it seems like beta-sitosterol is the natural equivalent to
Propecia.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Carlos Oscar Uebel: Growth
Factors Used to Expedite Hair Growth and Yield after Hair Transplant.
Growth factors concentrated from a patient's own bloodaccelerate hair
regrowth while producing up to 35 percent more follicular density, says
Carlos Oscar Uebel, M.D.
"Normally it takes three months for hair to start growing. For some
patients this is very problematic. Grafts fertilized with platelet-rich
plasma start to grow in a few weeks," says Dr. Uebel, associate
professor of plastic surgery at Pontifícia Universidade Católicado Rio
Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Prior to surgery, technicians
take 80 cc of blood, centrifuge it, then concentrate the plasma into a
gel. Dr. Uebel then places donor follicles in the gel for 15 minutes,
much in the same way a horticulturalist inoculates roots tohasten
propagation.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Cole: Vitiligo-Thoughts
on Pigmentation in Strip Scars. Here is an interesting study to treat
vitiligo. Vitiligo is a loss of skin pigment. Dark skin turns white in
vitiigo. When you do a strip surgery, you find that the scar is often
bright pink or white. One way we have treated these white strip scars in
the past is to place grafts from FIT into the scar. We have found that
this often helps to make the scars regain some pigment through the
production of melanin. In this study normal skin grafts were placed into
the white areas of skin. They also developed pigment and turned a more
natural state of brown in this dark skinned individual.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Arvind: Donor
Exchange Method, Birth of a new FUE Hair Transplant Protocol. Forum
member engages Dr. Arvind in a discussion about using body hair graft to
seal off the scalp donor sites after harvesting. According to Dr.
Arvind, the potential benefits for such an experiment are: 1. If the
body hair in that particular patient takes on the characteristics of the
scalp hair, the patient could potentially multiply his donor supply. 2.
If the body hair, in a particular patient, does not take on acceptable
level of scalp hair characteristics, it can still provide much needed
coverage even with extensive scalp hair extractions.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Arvind: Repairing
Hair Transplant Plugs Without Excising the Grafts. Repair of a wrongly
performed hair transplant involves decision making in equal parts on the
side of the doctor as well as the patient. Sometimes, the patient may be
wary/unwilling to follow certain approaches that the HT doctor may feel
will do good. In such a situation the patient may have a plan of action
in his own mind. Some such approaches may be beneficial, others maybe
not. This is an illustration of a repair case where the patient is
against excising any of the existing plugs.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Arvind: Safe
Harvesting, What Constitutes Over-harvesting of the Donor Area?
Over-harvesting the donor area, whether by fue or by strip IS fraught
with danger. With strip, there is the risk of the scar falling out of
the safe zone- especially if it is the 3rd mega-strip and the doctor
does not take into account the excised scalp tissue while calculating
the safe zone. With fue, the danger is of harvesting beyond a particular
percentage of grafts. Here’s an interesting and in-depth discussion
about the danger of over-harvesting led by Dr. Arvind.

Reference – Lithium chloride can directly inhibit the proteasomal
degradation of certain proteins like CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein
alpha (C/EBPalpha) independent of its action on GSK-3.
Lithium is known to upregulate beta-catenin but is also known to cause
hair loss with prolonged use. This may have to do with its inhibition
of PGE1 (particularly cAMP ). Other prostaglandin
inhibitors like cox inhibitors are known to cause hair loss as well,
though a non-permanent form via disrupted anagen. You may be able to
bypass this effect of lithium with a prostaglandin agonist like
minoxidil or latanoprost.

reduce blood hormone levels, of DHT or testosterone. At least in the

technicians take 80 cc of blood, centrifuge it, then concentrate the
plasma into a gel. Dr. Uebel then places donor follicles in the gel for

go out in the sun when using retin-a it makes your skin more suseptible
to sun burn probably for the same reason as it causes cells to more
easily commit cell death). Also, an upregulation of TGF-beta2 might be
necessary for follicular growth as recently demonstrated by Dr. Fuchs in
her article "A signaling pathway involving TGF-beta2 and snail in
hair follicle morphogenesis."”

secondary germ, a biochemically distinct but
functionally equivalent progenitor cell population, at the termination
of catagen” New study by Dr. Costarelis supports the notion that
keratinocytes can “dedifferentiate” to a stem cell state in response
to wounding, perhaps related to signals from the stem cell niche.
Finally, we also present evidence that quiescent bulge cells undergo
apoptosis during follicle remodeling in catagen, indicating that a
subpopulation of bulge cells is not permanent.

“And in a key 1999 review of four well-designed clinical trials
involving 519 men with mild to moderate (symptomatic) BPH, analysts
reported that beta-sitosterol provided notable relief from urinary
problems. It also increased urine flow and caused few side effects.
Interestingly, benefits matched those commonly seen with prescription
BPH drugs. Beta-sitosterol even holds promise for lowering a man's
cholesterol levels at the same time that it controls BPH symptoms. It's
still not clear exactly how beta-sitosterol benefits the prostate;
research indicates that it may lessen inflammation and block the
accumulation of cholesterol in the prostate gland itself. It does not
appear to alter the size of the prostate, however.”

inexpensive and can drastically extend a product's shelf life.
Unfortunately, while the use of these ingredients may benefit cosmetic
companies, it can be quite detrimental to consumers. Since FDA
regulations are based on the incorrect idea that cosmetics do not
permeate the skin, ingredients that would not be allowed in a product
that’s meant for internal use are accepted for cosmetic use by the
FDA. This means that, although chemicals with the potential to damage
the body are prominent in many products, they are not acknowledged as
dangerous.”

increased resistance to psychological and physical stress - not to

focus on expediting the epidermization process. The aim should be to

Hair Transplant - Dr. Cole: FUE
and Repair Procedure of Over 3900 grafts from the Hairline throughout
the Top and the Crown. This is a patient who had multiple plug grafts
placed several years ago by the old punch graft method that left shotgun
scars in the back of the scalp. He was a class 5A to 6 and all his hair
from the top to the crown area was completely bald. He also has numerous
elliptical scars in the back of the scalp where someone shamelessly
talked this person into suturing a hairpiece to the top of his scalp. 13
months ago he underwent a FIT/FUE procedure of over 3900 grafts from the
hairline throughout the top and including the crown. The old plug scars
in the donor area reduced the total follicular density so that Dr. Cole’s
team had to harvest follicular units between, above, and below the
shotgun scars. The old hairline was too low and the hair growth angle
was incorrect and unnatural. All of these factors required a complex
repair plan that was carried out 13 months ago at Dr. Cole’s
clinic. Dr. Cole and his team also added some FIT grafts on the
"shot gun scars" in his donor area. The plug scars and
other scars are not visible anymore.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Cole: Repair
Case for Patient with Low Follicular Density Made Possible by FUE .This
patient is a repair case who desired additional coverage in the crown.
He had numerous procedures in the 1980s including plugs and scalp
reductions. This left him with a pluggy hairline and pluggy tear drop
shaped crown. Tear drop shaped crowns result from midline scalp
reductions that lower the crown into the donor area and elevate it
toward the front. He did not want to soften the hairline. He simply
wanted more hair in the crown. His donor area was extremely tight and
diffusely scarred with a low donor density. Dr. Cole and his team
attempted one strip procedure on him, but this yielded only 400 grafts
due to the low follicular density, excessive scarring, and extremely
tight donor area. Subsequently, Dr. Cole was able to remove 2000 grafts
with the FIT/FUE technique. This is 7 months post op results.

All Natural & Supplements: Laminaria Extract
Increases Outer Root Sheath Cell Growth
Recently, stem cells discovered in the bulge region of the outer root
sheath (ORS) are found to be able to induce the anagen phase in the hair
follicle cycle. In an attempt to research for growth-promoting agents
for the ORS cells, some studied the effect of various botanical extracts
on the growth of cultured human hair follicles. Among the studies
conducted, Laminaria angustata extract was found to be able to increase
the ORS cell growth. Further, hair-growth in the shaved skin of C3H mice
was also promoted by the topical application of the extract.

Hair Multiplication - “Wnt Signaling through
the ß-Catenin Pathway Is Sufficient to Maintain, but Not Restore,
Anagen-Phase Characteristics of Dermal Papilla Cells “
Abstract from Investigative Journal of Dermatology
“Dermal papilla cells of the hair follicle can be maintained in an
active, hair-inducing state in vitro when cocultured with cells
secreting Wnt3a. By inducing cultured dermal papilla cells to secrete
Wnt themselves, we demonstrate that this activity is a direct effect of
Wnt signaling to dermal papilla cells. We further demonstrate that the
effects of Wnt3a are exerted through activation of the ß-catenin signal
transduction pathway and do not require alternative Wnt transduction
cascades. Once dermal papilla cells have lost hair-inducing properties
in vitro, neither treatment with Wnt nor expression of a truncated and
activating form of ß-catenin is sufficient to restore these properties

fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF
or FGF-7) is a recently identified 28-kd member of the FGF family that
induces proliferation of a wide variety of epithelial cells, including
keratinocytes within the epidermis and dermal adnexa.
