Accutane and Hair Loss Accutane (isotretinoin) is powerful drug commonly prescribed to treat severe nodular acne. Four to five months of Accutane treatment usually leads to clearing of acne. Accutane is a naturally occurring derivative of vitamin A and is detectable in the bloodstream of all people. Vitamin A in large doses has the same effects as Accutane, both good and bad, but quickly becomes harmful since it builds up in the tissue. Unfortunately Accutane also comes with plenty of undesirable side effects and hair loss is one of them. While the manufacturer suggests that Accutane induced hair loss is likely to be temporary, we do know many people have developed permanent hair loss after using the medication. It is unknown whether the permanent hair loss is directly as a result of Accutane. But the number and frequency of reports is indeed alarming.
