New protocol for hair loss treatment using a patient's own blood as growth factors. This new therapy is NON surgical and non invasive. The concept was first publicized by Dr. Greco in Florida. Dr. Greco received a grant from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery ISHRS. Now this treatment is offered on a limited scale basis to selected patients.
Dr. Jones met with Dr. Greco in Florida recently
to discuss the potential of Platelet Rich Plasma
(PRP) as a hair loss treatment.
Dr. Jones announced in April 2009 that he will
start treating patients with PRP, on a small
scale trial basis. The process is fairly
straight forward and non-invasive. It will be
performed in his Toronto/Oakville clinic in
Canada.
Please note that the use of Platelet Rich Plasma
for hair regeneration is a new concept. Dr.
Greco seems to have some success in this area.
However, there is no guarantee what kind of
results (or side effects) one may expect from
the treatment.
The process involves using the patient's own
blood as growth factors. It is a not a surgery.
Dr Jones will be using the exact same technique
and protocol used by Dr. Greco. At this point,
he has ordered enough supplies to treat 15
patients on a trial basis. There will be a small
fee for the procedure, but it is strictly to
cover the cost of the supplies and overhead
required to administer the treatment. Pictures
and results will be posted on Hairsite so that
everyone will be able to follow the progress.
Dr. Jones has no financial interest in the
trial.
Dr. Jones has agreed to do a small Q&A with
everyone in the
Hair Multiplication forum. You can read more
about the treatment protocol, discussions,
photos, and even video on
platelet rich plasma hair therapy. For more
technical info about this treatment, please read
the
research grant paper.
According to Dr. Jones, "After spending some time with Dr. Greco last week, I was impressed enough with the results I saw to order the equipment to offer PRP to 15 patients on a trial basis. I will be among the first patients treated at my clinic and will be following each patient with photos on my site and forwarding them to HairSite. The treatment seems to work best in patients with diffuse thinning rather than complete hair loss. It can be used in conjunction with Propecia and Minoxidil. Since we are using the patients own plasma, it is unlikely there will be any risk to the patient."
