Mark your calendar - April 2, 2000, Alopecia Areata Q&A session in Michigan, U.S. Alopecia Areata affects close to five million Americans. While a majority of the victims are children, this condition has affected a fair number of adults as well. Scientists believe that Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease and the condition may be triggered by a sudden weakening in the immune system. Alopecia Areata is characterized by sudden and rapid loss of hair occurring in patches on the scalp. At times, Alopecia Areata can progress to other more extreme conditions such as Alopecia Universalis where the hair on the entire body starts to shed. There is no cure for Alopecia Areata at this time. While the condition is by no means life threatening, it can wreck hovac on the victim's emotional well being and bring enormous social distress. National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) is the leading support group for this type of hair loss in the United States. NAAF announced a Questions & Answers session that is open to all on April 2, 2000. The Q&A session will take place in Michigan for the first time. This conference is free of charge and is open to Alopecia Areata patients of all ages as well as their family members and friends. The conference starts at noon in the Science Building at the Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan. The conference will be hosted by Dr. Vera Price, leading researcher and clinicians in alopecia areata and Professor of Clinical Dermatology at University of California, San Francisco. Also, attending and available for questions is a panel of three other dermatologists. The conference consists of two sessions. Dr. Price will talk about Alopecia Areata in the first session followed by the Q&A forum. Also, trained therapists will lead two separate groups, one for children aged 5 to 11 and the other for children aged 12 to 16. The second session of the conference addresses various treatments, coping techniques and support groups that are available. Some of the topics that will be covered are Tai Chi, mind/body therapies, alternative therapies, exercise and massage etc. Pre-registration is required for this conference.
