| Thyroid problem is a frequently
overlooked cause of hair loss. It is usually disguised among many different forms, eg:
fatigue, unexplained weight gain, depression, mood swings, and forgetfulness etc. The thyroid gland locates in your neck just under your tonsils. It regulates hormones production, governs matabolism and affects almost every type of tissue in the body. Either an underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism) thyroid can be problematic. Either conditions are sometimes charactized by an enlarged thyroid which can be physically detected by examining your neck. However, doctors suggest that the most reliable examination is through a Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) testing which can be done at any doctor's office. The cost is anywhere from US $25 - US $50 and results are very reliable. Thyroid conditions seem to be more common among women age 35 and older. Women experiencing hair loss should definitely have a TSH testing. Thyroid problems are often being confused with menopause in older women. Since both thyroid problems and menopause may cause hair loss in women, a TSH testing becomes an essential first step in the diagnosis process. Once diagnosed, thyroid problems are easily treated.
