A strand of hair is probably all that is required to save you from breast cancer. According to Dr. Veronica James, University of Sydney, the microscopic characteristics of pubic hair can offer amazingly accurate diagnosis of whether a woman has breast cancer or not. Dr. James further added that the same analysis can also reveal if a woman has inherited a certain gene that will put her at risk for the disease. The analysis is conducted with the help of an ultra-sensitive X-ray equipment. According to Dr. James, it is very easy to distinguish the difference in molecular structure between the healthy and the diseased hair. It is obvious to everyone. As for why pubic hair is used for the analysis, Dr. James explained that pubic hair tends to yield more accurate results since unlike scalp hair, pubic hair is less likely to be contaminated by hair dyes, perms, and other chemicals that we use on a day-to-day basis. Dr. James mentioned that even sun-exposed scalp hair can skew the results. The experiments conducted by Dr. James are double blinded and is reported to be highly reliable. Scientists plans to conduct further experiments and hope that we can soon come up with a more effective, accurate and less invasive alternative to mammograms. HairSite
