Drugs or Medications that Cause Hair Loss

Few realize that certain drugs, medications, dietary supplements or even herbal remedies that we take can cause hair loss. While each individual's response to certain medications is different, it is important to be aware of the fact that the medications you are taking could be causing your hair loss.

We have compiled a list of drugs or dietary supplements that have been reported to cause hair loss in some people. Please note that this is by no means a comprehensive list of all drugs and supplements that may cause hair loss. In addition, not everyone experiences hair loss as a result of using these products. As we always say, please check with your doctor for more accurate information and diagnosis.

  • Acne medication: Accutane, manufacturer specifically indicates that though rare, one of the side effects may be hair loss.

  • Anticoagulents: Coumarin, Heparin

  • Antidepressants: Amphetamines, Tricyclics, St. John's Wort

  • Antithyroid agents: Carbimazole, Iodine, Thiocyanate, Thiouracil. Note that over or under active thyroid activity can lead to hair loss. As a result, thyroid medications, when taken inappropriately, will lead to hair loss.

  • Arthritics medications: penicillamine, Ridaura (auranofin), Indocin (indomethacin), Naprosyn (naproxen), Clinoril (sulindac), Folex (methotrexate).

  • Beta Blocker Drugs: Tenormin (atenolol), Lopressor (metoprolol), Corgard (nadolol), Inderal (propranolol), Blocadren (timolol) - these are drugs mainly for people with high blood pressure.

  • Cholesterol medication: Atromis-S (clofibrate), Lopid (gemfibrozil) - these are mainly cholesterol lowering medications.

  • Epilepsy medications: this would include certain anticonvulsants such as Tridione (trimethadione).

  • Parkinson Medications: Dopar, Larodopa (levodopa).

  • Steroids

  • Testosterone boosters: dietary supplements that are loaded with amino acids which can indirectly boost one's testosterone levels. For example Androstenedione. Click here for details.

  • Ulcer medicatioins: Tagamet (cimetidine), Zantac (ranitidine), Pepcid (famotidine).

  • Vitamin A derivatives - Accutane (isotretinoin), Tegison (etretinate).

  • PEGASYS and COPEGUS combination or other hepatitis B medications. click here for details.

It is important to realize that even your doctor may not be able to tell you if a particular medication can cause hair loss. The best way is to contact the pharmaceutical company directly or the Physicians' Desk Reference. There are also many reference books or almanacs in bookstores that can help.
