While the numbers are not overwhelming, it is certainly upsetting to know that a fair number of people who lost hair as a result of vaccination never regrow their hair.

A report was released in the United States indicating a possible link between vaccination and hair loss. During a period of about 13 years, about 60 cases of hair loss were indentified among people who had received vaccines. It is suspected that the number could be a lot higher as it is unusal for people to report to the government's immunization department upon noticing hair loss. Most would simply turn to their doctors for help.

Among all the vaccines that were looked into, the study shows that hepatitis B vaccines seem to have the highest association with hair loss. Close to 80% of the hair loss cases were reported by people who received hepatitis B vaccines. Further hair loss were also reported when patients received additional doses of the vaccines, since most hepatitis B vaccines have to be administered three times on different days.

The study also concludes that more women were affected than men. However, this conclusion could be skewed by the fact that most men would expect to lose some of their hair during the course of their lives anyway. As a result, few men would actually come forward and report the situation.

The most alarming conclusion from the study is that a fair number of people did not regrow their hair or only had partial regrowth. Incidences of severe hair loss were also reported. Among those who reported severe hair loss, about 25% never gained their hair back.

If you suspect your hair loss is induced by a recent vaccination, please contact the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). A report can be filed by anyone who suspects he or she has health concerns as a result of vaccination.
