ABSTRACT FROM ARTICLES ON HAIR LOSS

TITLE YOUR HAIR ON DRUGS
ABSTRACT FROM: Men's Journal, August 1996
AUTHOR Jim Thornton
THE ARTICLE TALKS ABOUT:
  • The cost of minoxidil in the form of a topical lotion in treating hair loss will be coming down rapidly. This is a result of the FDA's decision to allow Upjohn to market Rogain as a over-the-counter product, which will reduce Rogain's price from about US $60 to about Us $30 a bottle. And a prescription is no longer required for the 2% strength formula.
  • In addition, the FDA granted three genetic-drug manufacturers to make the drug as well, which means more price competition in the market and lower costs to the consumers.
  • According to some dermatologists, to take advantage of minoxidil in treating hair loss, the key is to start early in your life. Otherwise it may be more difficult to see satisfactory results.
  • Rogain is reported to be effective only on the crown. This is due to the fact that clinical studies of the drug on hair loss were only conducted on the crown area of the scalp. Many physicians have recently observed that Rogain is also effective in the hairline areas of the scalp.
  • As many of you have already known, Rogain is a lifetime commitment. Minoxidil induced hair growth will fall off if the treatment is terminated. Also, minoxidil will not be effective if used intermittently.
  • Besides Rogain, a new drug is on the horizon to combat hair loss. Merck & Co. is currently researching finasteride in treating hair loss and is in the final phase of clinical study required for FDA approval under the brand name Propecia. If everything is on schedule, the drug will be in the market in about two years.
