- The article is a continuation or sequel to the study documented
in the 1992 Journal of
International Medical Research about the effectiveness of Viviscal in treating hair loss.
- This article talks about a more recent research that involved
older male participants with a longer history of male pattern baldness.
- 30 males aged 34-48 participated in the study. The participants
have varying degree of baldness ranging from class II to class IV according to the
Hamilton Scale. The duration of hair loss ranges from 3 years to 20 years. Most
participants have been treated with minoxidil prior to this study.
- The study lasted 8 months. During the period, the participants
were given Viviscal oral tablets twice daily in conjunction with a topical lotion and
shampoo formulated with the active ingredient in Viviscal.
- Results: 1) all participants reported cessation of hair loss
after two months' treatment. 2) The mean balding area of the scalp dropped to 9% from 39%.
3) Over half of the participants showed hair regrowth. 4) Increased elasticity and
thickness of the scalp were also reported. 5) Side effects: mild to moderate dryness of
the scalp.
- The article concluded that Viviscal oral and topical treatment is
effective in treating older males with a longer history of hair loss. The article also
mentioned that it is unknown exactly how Viviscal works to slow down hair loss and
