LASER HAIR TRANSPLANTATION |
| ABSTRACT FROM: |
Journal of Dermatology & Surgical Oncology, 1994;
20:515-521 |
| AUTHOR |
- Walter P. Unger, MD

| THE ARTICLE TALKS ABOUT: |
- Studies were conducted to investigate the pros and cons of
laser-assisted hair transplantation.
- The authors proposed the following theoretical benefits of
laser-assisted hair transplantion:
- A reduction in bleeding and speedier post-surgical recovery and
regrowth of the transplanted grafts.
- Increase in hair density compared to using the scalpel blade
approach, since some of the balding skin is removed when using laser to prepare the
recipient sites.
- Hair grafts are more easily manoeuvred into the recipient areas
and slits that are prepared by laser.
- A reduction in sacrring in the donor area.
- Experiments were conducted on 10 subjects with the following
results:
- 40% of the subjects reported better "hair yield/hair
counts" than traditional scalpel approach.
- 50% of the subjects reported same "hair yield/hair
counts" compared to the traditional scalpel approach.
- 10% of the subjects reported poorer "hair yield/hair
counts" compared to the traditional scalpel approach.
- 50% of the subjects reported earlier hair regrowth than the
traditional scalpel approach.
- The optimum settings and intensity of the laser were not
discussed in the report. According to the authors, this has yet to be determined.
