- FDA (Food and Drug
Administration in the U.S) gave clearance to the
drug Propecia (1 mg finasteride) - the first ever
pill for male pattern baldness. Propecia is a
prescription drug and will be available in the
market in January 1998. Retail price is estimated
to be around U.S $50 for a 30 day supply. Merck
will introduce a 3 month supply
"ProPak™" package that comes with
a U.S. $10 rebate.
- Propecia™ inhibits
the formation of DHT - a derivative of the male
hormone testosterone which is believed to be the
main cause of male pattern baldness.
- The drug has been tested
on over 1,800 men (age 18 - 41) with varying
degree of baldness. About 83% of the participants
had reported some degree of hair growth or
reduction in hair loss. The drug is more
effective on the top than around the hairline
areas. Also, it is recommended that the drug be
used in conjunction with Neutrogena T/Gel
Shampoo.
- Since Propecia affects the
male hormone in one's body, women are cautioned
AGAINST taking the drug as it may cause birth
defects. Also, about 2% of the male participants
reported loss of sex drive or impotency after
taking the drug. However, the side effects will
diminish once the participants discontinue the
medication.
- Propecia is more effective
on the top of your head than around the hairline
areas. Long term commitment is required. Propecia
induced hair growth will fall off once the
medication is discontinued. It may take up to 1
year before you know whether you respond to the
medication or not. Clinical studies have not
shown that Propecia will cause hair growth in
other parts of the body.
