- There is no one single treatment for treating skin disorders associated
with Demodex mites. Also, since there are different types of skin disorders associated
with Demodex mites, you should consult your doctor for a treatment that is appropriate for
your conditions.
- The most common recommendation is to apply gentamicin (sulfate) or any
bland ointment topically to the affected areas. Some have suggested Danish ointment, a
polysulfide preparation, as a topical treatment. However, for those who do not respond
well to the ointment, a 0.5% selenium sulfide cream can be used. Others such as 4%
pilocarpine gel or an ointment of 10% sulfur and 5% balsam are also said to be effective.
According to Dr. George Fulk, Pilocarpine gel, in particular, has the additional
benefit of being directly toxic to the mites. Pilocarpine is a parasympathomimetic drug
and it kills the mites by constricting their bronchioles and suffocating them.
- For scalp inflammation or hair problems associated with Demodex, Nioxin
introduced in April 1998 the Semodex line of products formulated for that purposes.
The Semodex treatment comes with a shampoo and a topical lotion. The shampoo is designed
to cleanse the scalp and eliminate the enzyme and residue caused by Demodex. The topical
lotion is designed to inhibit further infestation by the mite. The Semodex line of
products is available in most hair salons in the US. Email HairSite@aol.com if you have trouble locating Semodex
in your area.
- However, Nioxin is not the only company with products designed for Demodex
associated scalp problems. A Hawaiian company distributes a Demodicidin formula that was
invented by a Chinese dermatologist. The formula was designed to inhibit Demodex activity
and prevent inflammation to skin and hair. Email HairSite@aol.com
for availability of this product.
- In addition, Dr. Qu Kui Zun, former Chief Physician of the
Dermatology Department of Qingdao Medical College, has formulated a blend of herbs to
counter demodex infection and nourish skin and hair. Email HairSite@aol.com for contact information.
