Demodex and its association with hair problems was not
discovered by Nioxin. Demodex is a commonly known mite among medical profession and has
been the subject of numerous studies going back many years ago.
Research has proved that Demodex is associated with many
kinds of skin conditions. However, most researchers are reluctant to conclude that Demodex
is a direct cause of those skin conditions. While it is possible that Demodex cause
certain kinds of skin conditions, it is also possible that certain skin conditions have
become breeding grounds for the mites.
Demodex as a direct cause for hair loss has also raised
questions as to why the mite would attack the hair follicles of men differently from that
of women's.
Research has shown that people or animals with weak immune
systems are more prone to be infested with the mite.
Demodex is more common that we realize and most humans and
animals have good tolerance for this mite without developing any skin conditions.
Almost all skin conditions associated with Demodex can be
easily treated by topical medication.
As of April 1998, HairSite has requested twice from Nioxin
for the clinical reports on their study on Demodex. I contacted Nioxin again on 4/14/98
and was informed that the clinical studies were presented to the medical profession at a
conference in Miami January 1998, however the clinical reports will not
be made available to the public. So to all of you who have been sending emails to HairSite
requesting that information, please pursue elsewhere, cause we have not received any
clincial reports from Nioxin either.
