  • In 1994 about 60 million Americans have spent over Us $1 billion on hair loss treatments.
  • Genetic predisposition is the main causes of hair loss for most people. in the case of male pattern baldness, the main culprit is DHT, a male hormone that is formed when testosterone interacts with an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase.
  • The author presents a number of methods that have been proven to be effective in arresting hair loss:
    • Volumizers: These are shampoos, conditioners, gels and other styling aids that make hair look fuller cosmetically.
    • Hairpieces: This option gives people an instant solution to baldness. New technology has made hairpieces more natural and less easily detected by others.
    • Drugs: Rogain (minoxidil) is the only drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of hair loss. Rogain only works on some people and is a lifetime commitment. Any minoxidil induced hair growth will fall off upon termination of the treatment.
    • Surgery: Surgical hair restoration techniques have improved significantly in recent years. It may take several sessions before you see satisfactory results.
  • Prevention: the followings are proposed to prevent hair loss:
    • Shampoo frequently can wash off sebum that are high in testosterone and DHT.
    • Do not rub your hair dry after shampoo. Instead, pat or blot dry your hair to avoid excessive damage or breakage.
    • Apply conditioner after shampoo to reduce tangles in your hair.
    • Perms or coloring can add body and volume to your hair.
