With the recent popularity of Propecia - the first ever anti-baldness pill, many surgical hair restoration providers are beginning to voice their opinions about the pill. "On the surface, Propecia appears to be a quick and easy method of trying to reverse the effects of male pattern baldness, but it is important to remember it is a far cry from being a cure-all. Most importantly, the potential side effects, especially the long-term side effects of the drug, should be the overriding concerns to both the users and the manufacturer," said L.Lee Bosley, founder of Bosley Medical Group, one of United States largest medical group for hair loss.

According to a press release issued by Bosley Medical Group, Propecia works by inhibiting the enzyme (5 alpha reductase) responsible for the production of the male hormone, dyhydrotestosterone or DHT. DHT governs prostate development. At the same time, 5-alpha reductase can also be found in the scalp where it contributes to male pattern baldness. Based on clinical testing conducted on Propecia, the drug has been proven to slow hair loss and promote hair growth in participants with mild to moderate hair loss. On average, participants in clinical studies reported that they gained 80 to 90 hairs in a 1-inch area at the top of the head.

Dr. Bosley claimed that the clinical results attained by Propecia would immediately be dismissed as unacceptable by Bosley Medical Group's standards. Dr. Bosley added that the health issues relating to the use of Propecia cannot be ignored. "The FDA has just approved a drug that has the capability to impair male sexual performance, creating the inability to achieve an erection, decreases libido and has the horrifying potential of causing specific birth defects in a developing male fetus, " said Dr. Bosley.

Dr. Bosley concluded by saying that surgical hair restoration, on the other hand, is safe and can be applied to both men and women. Surgical procedures are long-term as long as the hairs from the donor area are genetically programmed to stay permanently. Also, once the donor hairs are transplanted to the balding area, they will take root and grow 99% of the time forever.
