AUTHOR Jeff Stevenson
THE ARTICLE TALKS ABOUT:
  • The author talks about several new treatment for hair loss.
  • Proscar - This drug is manufactured by Merck & Company. The drug has been approved by FDA for the treatment of benign prostate enlargement. The drug also shows positive effects on the treatment of hair loss. It appears that Proscar acts as a hormone blocker and can reduce the level of a hormone that causes hair loss. Dr. Marty Sawaya, assistant professor of dermatology at the State University of New York in Brooklyn, says that an effective treatment for hair loss would include combining a hormone-blocker such as Proscar and a special enzyme called aromatase that is found absent in the hair roots of balding people. Currently, Dr. Marty Sawaya is researching drugs that can enhance the production of aromatase.
  • Stimulation of hair follicles - Various techniques have been used in the past to stimulate hair follicles. According to Dr. Douglas Altcheck, professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, American Indians are known to have used chili peppers to stimulate hair growth for centuries. Alternatively, Dr. Altcheck has some success in slightly freezing the scalp by means of a liquid nitrogen spray. In addition, Current Technology Corporation in Vancouver, Canada uses electrical current to stimulate the hair follicles. The procedure is based on clinical studies throughout US and Canada.
