| According to a Chicago press release in November 1998,
research suggests that Saw Palmetto is effective in treating prostate problems without the
side effects of traditional drugs. It has been widely used in Europe to treat prostate
enlargement. A report in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicated
that Saw Palmetto have been used to treat prostate related symptoms as far back as in the
1700s. The report also discussed a review of 18 clinical studies involving close to 3,000
patients using Saw Palmetto to treat noncancerous prostate enlargement. According to Dr.
Timothy Wilt of the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, most clinical studies
show that men taking Saw Palmetto Extracts were nearly twice as likely to report
improvements in symptoms than men taking placebos. In recent years, the herbal remedy has shown to be effective against hair loss as well. When compared to Finasteride, the active ingredient in the hair loss pill Propecia, Saw Palmetto provided similar benefits with fewer side effects, such as impotence. However, some doctors cautioned that the clinical results should be viewed with caution. Specifically, the problems lie in the fact that few studies reported their findings in standardized ways, most were brief and they involved varying doses and combinations of Saw Palmetto with other plant-based compounds. |
