| According to a study reported in the Annals of
Internal Medicine, based on a survey of close to 500 women aged between 50 to 74, about 38
percent had resorted to hormone replacement therapy after menopause. What is interesting
is that the decision to use hormone replacement seems to be influenced by factors other
than medical risks and benefits. The study found that women in the South and West tend to
use hormone replacement therapy more than women in the rest of the country. Also, women
with higher education are more likely to be users than women with less education.
The study concluded that factors such as education and geography rather than medical
considerations show a need for greater efforts to define the demographics that are the
most likely to benefit from the therapy. "In an ideal world, we would think it would
be a person's medical conditions that would be the deciding factor", added Dr. Nancy
Keating from Women's Hospital in Boston. Here are some of the statistics from the study:
Dr. Keating added that for the time being, there is no easy guideline to identify who would be the perfect candidate for the therapy. While clinical studies have shown that hormone replacement therapy can decrease symptoms of menopause, improve cholesterol levels and bone density etc., its long term benefits and effects on the patients are unclear. Some have suggested that the therapy may increase risks of breast cancer in some patients. |
