Perhaps this is a good time to wrap up the
millennium by ranking the various treatments in the market. This ranking is strictly based
on the amount of inquiries and discussions that we received during the year together with
an informal survey conducted with three online pharmacies for hair loss products. It is by
no means objective. Make sure you ask your doctor before you try any products discussed
here.

from Pharmacia & Upjohn which also claims that Rogaine is the # 1 OTC treatment in the
market for both men and women. Excerpts of the press release are included below for your
reference:
Quote:
"Despite the hopes of millions of balding men that a magic solution would eradicate
hereditary hair thinning by the end of the 20th century, such a "miracle cure"
remains undiscovered. After decades of scientific research, genetic therapies and common
myths, Rogaine(R) remains the leading FDA-approved over-the-counter treatment for
hereditary hair thinning. To date, nothing has been proven more effective for maintaining
hair and stimulating new hair growth.
In 1971, researchers introduced a new drug to combat high blood pressure called minoxidil.
The drug was found to have an interesting side effect -- hair growth in humans. By 1986,
the research department of the former Upjohn Company (now Pharmacia & Upjohn
(P&U)) perfected a minoxidil formulation that maintains and regrows hair on the head.
Thus, the hair loss treatment category was born. More than ten years after its
introduction, Rogaine is still the leading topical treatment for hereditary hair thinning
for both men and women.
