ALPHABETICAL ORDER

  • 6BAP (6-Benzylaminopurine)

  • About hair loss - technical and comprehensive discussion about hair loss, hair structure, hair biology, and hair regrowth. Click here.

  • Acetamide
    • Acetamide is usually used as a solvent for chemicals. This compound is used in a lot of the hair loss topical lotions or shampoo.
  • Acid polysaccharides

  • Aldactone (spironolactone) - a potent anti-androgen commonly prescribed for women and sometimes men with androgenetic hair loss. Can be taken orally or used as a topical agent. Click here for more spironolactone information.

  • Alopecia
    • This is a medical term for hair loss or baldness in general. There are different types of alopecia.
  • Alopecia androgenetica
    • This is a medical term for male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. This type of hair loss is usually hormone related.
  • Alopecia areata

    • It refers to the condition when there are well defined oval shape bald patches on the scalp.
  • Alopecia totalis
    • It refers to the condition when all the hair on the scalp is lost.
  • Alopecia universalis
    • This is an extreme case of baldness where all the hair on the scalp and the entire body is lost.
  • Amino acid
    • Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and are the end products of protein digestion. They are essential for human metabolism.
    • There are almost 100 kinds of amino acids. The main source of essential amino acids is from food. Essential amino acids include: methionine, cysteine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, tyrosine, threonine, valine, phenylalanine and tryptophan.
    • Some proteins contain all the essential amino acids, eg: milk, cheese, eggs and meat.
    • Once the protein is broken down by means of digestion, amino acids pass onto the bloodstream and is absorbed by the tissue depending on the tissue's requirement for amino acids.
    • Since protein is the building block for healthy hair, lack of amino acids in the body may adversely affect hair growth.
  • Anagen
    • It refers to the growing phase of hair cycles.
  • Anti-androgens - Antiandrogens are sometimes referred to as androgen antagonist. It represents a family or a class of hormone antagonist compounds that are capable of preventing or inhibiting the biologic effects of the male sex hormones (androgens) on androgen-responsive or androgen-sensitive tissues in the body. The word antiandrogen is sometimes used synomously with the term "androgen receptors blocker" because antiandrogens usually work by blocking the appropriate receptors, competing for binding sites on the cell's surface, literally obstructing the androgens' pathway. Also read article on Anti-androgens contributed by Dr. Proctor.
    • To remove the effects of androgens:
      1. Anti-androgen: binds the androgen recptor which inhibits its action
      2. 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors: less DHT means less potent androgens
      3. Androgen receptor(AR) downregulation: Less AR, obviously, means there is less for the androgens to bind to and less signaling. This can be done in many ways most of which are not well understood. Inhibition of GSK-3beta is one way of doing lowering the amount of AR that has been confirmed.
  • Arimidex - Aromatase inhibitors
    • Aromatase inhibitors are commonly used by men who are using 5 alpha reductase inhibitors and worried about feminizing effects such as gyno.
  • Ascorbic acid
    • A technical name for Vitamin C
  • Azelaic acid -  a gentle acid that has been reported in the British Journal of Dermatology to be able to inhibit up to 90% of DHT in human skin. Many topical hair loss treatments now include azelaic acid as a DHT inhibitor. Click here for more azelaic acid information.

  • Avodart (dutasteride) - oral 5 alpha reductase (%AR) inhibitor that is more potent than Propecia or finasteride. Avodart or dutasteride inhibits both types of 5AR, type I and type II. Avodart or dutasteride is the biggest news in hair loss since Propecia. Click here for more hair loss dutasteride info.
  • Calf-thymus extract
Calf-thymus is synonymous with thymus gland. Thymus is a kind of lymphoid organ that is essential for the development of immunological functions of the body.
  • Clobetasol

  • Copper chloride

  • Corticosteroid, Betamethasone, Hydrocortisone - This is a family of steroid hormones produced in the adrenal cortex. Corticosteroids are involved in a variety of physiologic systems such as stress response, immune response and regulation of inflammation, and carbohydrate metabolism. It's indication for hair loss is mainly as an anti-inflammatory agents for the scalp. Long term use of corticosteroid products is not recommended as this can "thin" the skin tissue and affect collagen production. Click here for more betamethasone, corticosteroid, hydrocortisone information.
  • Dimethicone
    • It is a kind of silicone oil used to protect the skin against water-soluble irritants.
  • Emerging model for pattern balding (Contributed by Dr. Proctor)

  • Emu Oil (Lineolic Acid) - HairSite Library

  • Estrogen and male pattern baldness

  • Eucapil (Fluridil)

  • Eyelash loss - the medical term for eyelash loss madarosis. Eyelash loss can be permanent or temporary. This condition is often due to blepharitis, or inflammation of the eyelids, this can be properly diagnosed if you visit an ophthalmologist. Click here for more about eyelash loss.

  • Finasteride (Proscar / Propecia)
    • Finasteride is the generic name of the brand name drug Proscar. Proscar is manufactured by Merck and is FDA approved for the treatment of benign prostate enlargement. Clinical studies have shown that patients who have been using Proscar have experienced a slow down in hair loss and in some cases hair regrowth. Finasteride is available both as an oral medication and a topical lotion. Proscar is an oral medication that can be obtained with a prescription only.
    • It is speculated that finasteride or Proscar slows down the formation of DHT (Dehydrotestosterone), which is the main culprit for hair loss. DHT is a form of male hormone . DHT is formed when the male hormone testosterone interacts with the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. DHT is problably many times more potent than testosterone and is the main cause for hair loss.

  • Fluridil - Eucapil

  • Glutamine
    • It is a kind of non essential amino acid. It is suggested that glutamine maintains the integrity of gastrointestinal mucosa especially during hypermetabolic phase of stree response. Glutamine enhances cellular profliferation and may reduce the chances of bacteria translocation from the gut and improve absorption from the mucosa.
  • Gynecomastia - development of male breast tissue, a side effect associated with finasteride or dutasteride as reported by men with hair loss.

  • Hairlift (SEE SCALP LIFTS BELOW)

  • Hair cycle, a graphical illustration of different phases of the hair cycle.

  • Hair Flaps

The strips or patches are then rotate and suture to the frontal balding area. The results may sometimes be unnatural since the hair may be growing at an odd direction and the hair may look unusually dense. This is another radical surgical procedure that may carry greater risk of post-surgical complications.
  • Hair Transplantation
    • A surgical procedure in which a surgeon removes hair grafts from the back and the side of your head (also called the donor area or donor hair) and surgically inserts the donor grafts into the balding scalp. For some people, it may take several sessions of hair transplantation before they see noticeable results. More info.

  • Scalp Lifts ( Hairlift)
    • This is a surgical procedure similar to scalp reduction except that scalp lifts are more radical and extensive in nature. In scalp lifts, a majority of the bald skin is removed and the hair-bearing skin is then pulled together up toward the front of your head.
