Hair pieces - the basics please... (Hair Replacement Systems)

Hi guys - some of you may recognise me from the other forums, i've had an HT but need some info on systems as ive explained below - all in-put welcome.

I have never posted in this section before so please be patient with a newbie!

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a quick run down of the dos and dont's when researching, consulting, purchasing, and maintaining a hair system. The reason i ask is because i'm setting up a hair loss consultancy business and this is the one major area i am lacking in any great knowledge. Obviously if a client is interested in wearing a system i need to be able to give them the best, most ethical advice possible regarding their options.

Having had a transplant and used finasteride and other treatments/supplements i have a strong knowledge of these areas. However my sum research into systems was nearly four years ago when i consulted with Advanced Hair Studio in the UK, who were keen to shave my head and stick a system on top, or offer me laser therapy at extortionate rates. I think i had a lucky escape (especially given their persistent sales calls for months after).

From searching this forum it seems many advise purchasing on-line and doing self-maintenance, if anyone could list all the 'top' places to buy from and their pros/cons/differences it would be great. Im particulary in need of info on the best suppliers to UK as this is where im based. Also im sure many men at first atleast will prefer to go to a 'salon' like AHS or Hair club in the US, however is there a list of 'reputable/top salons' like in HT with Hasson&Wong/Shapiro/Armani/Cole/Feller, and ones to avoid like in HT we have the Bosley/MHR/Norton (UK) etc.

Also if someone could break down types of system and their differences would be great ie lace etc as my knowlede is very sketchy.

Sorry for the long post but any help is much appreciated and will help many others get the right advice if they are considering a system when i see them.

Thanks, bigT.

Don't get one. They ruin your life more than baldness ever can. I know. It nearly killed me.

Being a slave to a dead hedgehog on your head with everybody sniggering behind your back (because there is a good chance somebody will eventually pick up on it - and it only takes one) does not sound like fun to me.

So personally I think there is one 'basic' don't :-|

I agree. I think they suck. BUT, a lot of guys find them to be the answers to their problems. Not everyone can wear hair. But there are some guys who slap it on, glue it down and go out and don't think of it for a second.

The first thing you should be aware of is the so called 'fringing' phenomenon.

This basically means that the front of your hair system will deteriorate and consume itself in a matter of weeks and it would end up looking completely different and weird.

The second thing you should be aware of is that very few people can match you real hair color. hair systems color tend to fade and certain salons (even the one that is considered the best in the world) cannot prevent or avoid your system looking orange when exposed to real sunlight.

The third thing is DO NOT TRUST PICTURES OR VIDEOS it doesn't matter how good they look. It is a smoke and mirror type of business so don't delude yourself that you will have an undetactable piece. Wigs are all detectable to the naked eye. Some are less detectable than others provided that you spent enourmous amount of money on them and you have a whole set of hair pieces.

Styling is of paramount importance. Most salons have stylist that haven't got a clue! just a bunch of them are actually able to style the system in such a way as to render it credible. However it won't last long. Three days down the line are you are back to square one.

Hair thickness. This is crucial. When I went to my consultation I was assured that the hair on the system would have matched my hair caracteristics. What a lie! 9 times out of ten the hair on the pieces are way too thick, therefore they produce a visible contrast with your existing hair.

You don't see this from pictures and video.

Another thing if you really want to buy a piece make sure that the density is low and the scalp is showing.

One final thought... don't do it mate! It took me more than a year to realize that most people would realize that I was wearing a wig but were too polite too mention it.

Maintanance is a nightmare, servicing frustating and inconsistent.

Keep in mind that I went to what is considered to be tha best hair replacement company in the world! (what a load of crap)

Don't do it man, you are going to regret for the rest of your life.

I agree. They can look amazing but you really have to "work" it. Maintenance is a nightmare and there is nothing like your own hair. By the end of the day, it's just not worth the hassle.

If someone thinks it's not worth the effort, then they shouldn't wear hair. Personally, it requires about 1/2 hour of my time each week.

Yes, the color fades (as does growing hair) but color conditioners can restore the color and also prevent the hair from turning red or orange.

I don't care who claims to be the best, I only know that my systems look great, the color is an excellent match and it doesn't require any more styling time than a growing head of hair would. And the bottom line is this - I love having hair and I know I look and feel better having hair.
