What do you people think about the effectiveness of adding 1% or 2% Nizoral Shampoo to Propacia?
(not for hair growth, but for the halting or the reduction of hair loss)

Go to your dermatologist, ask for a prescription called Olux - the same way rogane was made into an easy to apply foam, so is Nizoral - the stuff works and is SIMPLE SIMPLE SIMPLE to apply, if you have insurance, there is a generic and 2 months will cost you 10 bucks.

2% shampoo works better. Hanging is right that the Nizoral brand shampoo is very harsh.

Active Ingredients: Contains: Ketoconazole (1 %)

Inactive Ingredients: Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide MEA, Sodium Cocoyl Sarcosinate, Glycol Distearate, Acrylic Acid Polymer (Carbomer 1342), Fragrance, Sodium Chloride, Tetrasodium EDTA, Butylated Hydroxytoluene, Quaternium 15, Polyquaternium 7, Sodium Hydroxide, Hydrochloric Acid, FD&C Blue 1

Dr Lee's (www.minoxidil.com)Keto 2% shampoo much less harsh

The ingredients of the Regrowth Treatment Shampoo include: Ketoconazole 2%, Salicylic Acid 3%, purified water, hydrolyzed keratin protein, quarternium 19, sodium styrene/acrylates/divinylbenzene polymer, sodium laureth cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium laureth sulfate, panthenol, soapbark, citric acid, allantoin, methylparaben, glyceryl PABA, sodium chloride, fragrance, red coloring, imidurea, sodium hydroxide

Neither one is meant to be left on for more than 2-5 minutes in shower. I do believe 2% cream Hangin talks about is way more effective, but it is a pain to apply especially if you have hair longer than 1/2 inch. I know that you can get keto tablets and crush them and put them in minoxidil. There was a guy on this forum who did that with very good success (69 something??).

lets see how long do you
let shampoo stay on your head? 2 hours? thats the minimum most guys put the cream on......................does that take a rocket scientist to figure out?

guess that goes over your head

Go out and buy some Hcl, hydrochloric acid, and put it on your head......see how that feels. Gentle? Hardly................this is what is in the niz shampoo, that makes your hair so parched and dry, that is why it is described as HARSH. The cream has no Hcl in it. I guess, again it would take a rocket scientist to figure out that not putting acid on your head is better than putting it on your head............... :-D

Comparative efficacy of various treatment regimens for androgenetic alopecia in men.

J Dermatol. 2002 Aug;29(8):489-98

Our understanding of the aetiology of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) has substantially increased in recent years. As a result, several treatment modalities have been tried with promising results especially in early stages of AGA. However, as far as has been ascertained, there is no comprehensive study comparing the efficacy of these agents alone and in combination with each other.

One hundered male patients with AGA of Hamilton grades II to IV were enrolled in an open, randomized, parallel-group study, designed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of oral finasteride (1 mg per day), topical 2% minoxidil solution and topical 2% ketoconazole shampoo alone and in combination.

They were randomized into four groups.

Group I (30 patients) was administered oral finasteride,

Group II (36 patients) was given a combination of finasteride and topical minoxidil,

Group III (24 patients) applied minoxidil alone and

Group IV (10 patients) was administered finasteride with topical ketoconazole.

Treatment efficacy was assessed on the basis of patient and physician assessment scores and global photographic review during the study period of one year.

At the end of one year, hair growth was observed in all the groups with best results recorded with a combination of finasteride and minoxidil (Group II) followed by groups IV, I and III.

Subjects receiving finasteride alone or in combination with minoxidil or ketoconazole showed statistically significant improvement (p<0.05) over minoxidil only recipients. No signifcant side-effects related to the drugs were observed.

In conclusion, it is inferred that the therapeutic efficacy is enhanced by combining the two drugs acting on different aetiological aspects of AGA.

the shampoo is very harsh

although it contains the active ingredient ketoconazole, it contains hcl...hydrochloric acid...........

the cream seems to work better and is less harsh, stays on your head longer, but a lot of guys get a shed at 6 weeks or so, grew back thicker for me though, took a while

get the 2 percent, all the studies seem to indicate the 2 percent works way better

One hundered male patients with AGA of Hamilton grades II to IV were enrolled in an open, randomized, parallel-group study, designed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of oral finasteride (1 mg per day), topical 2% minoxidil solution and topical 2% ketoconazole shampoo alone and in combination. They were randomized into four groups. Group I (30 patients) was administered oral finasteride, Group II (36 patients) was given a combination of finasteride and topical minoxidil, Group III (24 patients) applied minoxidil alone and Group IV (10 patients) was administered finasteride with topical ketoconazole. Treatment efficacy was assessed on the basis of patient and physician assessment scores and global photographic review during the study period of one year. At the end of one year, hair growth was observed in all the groups with best results recorded with a combination of finasteride and minoxidil (Group II) followed by groups IV, I and III. Subjects receiving finasteride alone or in combination with minoxidil or ketoconazole showed statistically significant improvement (p<0.05) over minoxidil only recipients. No signifcant side-effects related to the drugs were observed.
