If that is a bald spot or even thinning, I would be very surprised - looks like a natural part to me. From where I sit, you don't have a hair loss problem and probably never will.

Impossible to tell from the pics provided, it doesn't look like it to me.. The best way to tell if you are or are going to would be to look at your family history. Do you have any older brothers, and if so, have they had any thinning? How about your dad? Uncles? Grandfathers? The more of these people that have balding, the more likely it is that you will have it, but nothing is guaranteed.

If your immediate family has no history of balding then I wouldn't worry about it. If they do, then I would keep a close eye on it and if you see it progressing, I would talk to your doctor and possibly consider getting on meds to stop it in its tracks.

Maybe, maybe not...
The question is: do you shed much hair? You 'd have there a better clue than these relatively benign pics.

Hi,

Well basically all my uncles have a full head of hair in their 40's my dad began loosing hair in his 40 though and my granddad (dads side) is pretty much bald in his 80's however all his sons (my uncles) have full head of hair apart from my dad who began loosing in his late 30's.

Mothers side my granddad had a full head of hair until he died unfortunately in his sixties. All his sons (my uncles) have a full head of hair until today which is in their late 30's. What do you think? It's pretty much just my dad and my fathers dad who had hair problems HOWEVER my dad had severe and I kid you not, severe dandruff which may have played a part? He still had hair in his 40 however it wasn't as thick....

Regarding shedding - From what I can notice it seems normal. Every second sweep through my hair I get one to two strands coming out from the back and sides pretty much whereever I sweep my fingers through I get a strand on every second or third 'sweep'. However in the showers I get upto and over 30 Strands from shampooing (since I leave my Nizoral on for 5minutes and massage a scalp I get a good indication of the amount of hair lost during showering).

I went to my doctor it was the very first thing I did about 2 Months ago, He personally did not think I was loosing hair and went around with his fingers and pulled hair and did not seem to find one strand to come out however during that particular week I was getting one or two strands each time I would sweep my hand through the back of my head, mostly coming from the back of my head which got my worried. Since than I seem to be loosing only a strand every 2nd to 3rd sweep (as said above). He did however suggest I go to 'specialist' Ashley and Martin what a joke that turned out me someone with an Invested interest in your case is a bad way to go get diagnosed!

I'm pretty sure it is normal to lose 30 to 40 hairs a day, we all go through a natural shedding cycle. It looks like your hair is a bit longer, so it may be more obvious with longer hair. Here is a good test, wash your hair in a kitchen sink or something with a strainer in the drain to catch all of the hairs. If you only catch 20 or so hairs in the drain, you are fine; but if you see 100 to 200 hairs, then you might have a problem.

It sounds like your uncles and your grandfathers both had pretty good hair genes and even though your father is "thinning" in his 40's, that's still better than average. It sounds like you might run into some thinning later in life, but it's probably not anything you need to be worried about now.

I think its hard to tell without comparing your pics to earlier pics. You do seem to have a wider part than average, though that doesn't mean you're loosing your hair. But if you think you notice a change, then you probably are.

Not that it means anything, but I had a very similar hair pattern as yours at your age. Looking back at pics from that age, I do notice a slow, gradual widening of my part. I got on Rogain at 19/20 and Nizoral and Finasteride about a year later. I was certainly lossing my hair, and it continued, but I've managed to keep most of it thanks to the meds.

Get some Rogain foam, then see a dermetologist who knows something about hair. Tell them you want to try Finasteride and Nizoral 2%. They'll do some bloodwork to rule out any other possible causes, and then put you on the meds. If you don't have any side-effects (you likely won't, despite what others on this board may say; several studies have shown that less than 2% have any side-effects at all), there's no harm in taking the meds even if you aren't loosing your hair. In a year or two, stop taking them and see what happens. If you don't start loosing your hair, you may have nothing to worry about until later in life. But if you do, you'll be glad that you got on the meds sooner rather than later. If you're loosing your hair, the earlier you get on the "Big Three" (Rogain, Nizoral 2%, and Finasteride), the better.

I don't mean to be rude but Fin is the last thing I want to be taking it is basically the very last option for me. Today I will purchase 2% Niz and with regards to Rogaine I have heard that if I start rogaine now I will have to use it for the rest of my life.

I was thinking of topical applications first and taking Monthly photos (as above) to see any change for better or worse)

I was thinking of Revivogen Scalp Treatment and Niz 2% what are your thoughts on that?

I just spent about 15 minutes pulling at my hair sweeping my hair etc while sitting at the computer and I managed to get out about 45 - 50 strands of hair from various parts of my head... (scared)

Since I ride a motorbike can the Helmet induce more hair falling out? Can wearing full faced helmets damaged hair follicles?

It is normal to lose up to 100 hairs per day. In a few persons it may increase during autumn and it is still normal.

But if you still have doubt that you are losing more hair than the normal limit, you can do a hair analysis to know the cause -

Hair Pull

A hair pull is a diagnostic procedure used in virtually every patient with a complaint of unexplained hair loss, to assess the presence or absence of any abnormalities in the hair growth cycle. About 25 to 50 hairs are removed from the scalp by a series of gentle hair pulls. Normally only a few hairs are dislodged with each pull. When more are removed the possibility of an abnormality of hair growth cycling is indicated; the ends of the pulled-out hairs may be examined under a microscope to evaluate the condition of the hair shaft and the bulb (the end of the hair shaft extracted from the hair follicle).

Variations of the hair pull are the phototrichogram and hair window:

Phototrichogram— hairs are clipped or shaved in an area of the scalp and consecutive photographs taken over a period of 3 to 5 days to determine the pattern of hair growth.

Hair window— hairs are clipped or shaved in an area of the scalp and hair growth is evaluated over the next 3 to 30 days.

Abnormalities of hair growth cycling is a relatively uncommon cause of hair loss but may occur at any age. Underlying causes of these abnormalities include thyroid hormone imbalance, nutritional deficiencies, side effects of certain drugs, anemia and other systemic illness, and psychological stress.

Scalp Biopsy
A biopsy of the scalp is usually performed only if additional information is needed to evaluate the mechanism of hair loss inside the hair follicle. Biopsy is not necessary in the great majority of patients evaluated for hair loss and hair restoration.

Hair Shaft Evaluation
If a hair shaft abnormality or infection is suspected, the hair shafts removed from the scalp by hair pull are examined under a microscope. Hair shaft abnormalities and fungal, bacterial or viral infection can be responsible for hair loss associated with hair breakage, hair shedding and hair that is unruly.

Well, Nizoral 2% requires a perscription, so you won't be able to buy it without seeing a doctor. Revivogen is snake oil - there's very little evidence it works. As for Rogain, yes, for it to work you must keep using it, but that doesn't mean you "have to"; its effectiveness is temporary (like any other treatment for a chronic disease), but it doesn't sentence you to a lifetime of use. If you stop, your hair will just keep falling out at the same rate as it was before you began it.

Propecia is by far the most effective treatment. There are studies that suggest that using Minoxodil and Propecia together enhance both of their effectivenesses. Why is Finasteride "the last thing" you want to use? Because of the side effects? Less than 2% suffer from side effects on it, and if you do, just stop taking it. I started taking it at 20 and never had any side effects, ever.

Talk to a doctor. A rule of thumb is, if you think you're losing your hair, you are. No matter how many different explinations you can come up with (no, wearing a helmet does not cause hair loss, nor does wearing a ball cap or any of the other old wives' tales), you're just kidding yourself. Stop the denial and get on treatments that are proven to work. On the up side, given your age, you'll probably see a true "cure" within 10-15 years - well within your "good" years. Until then, do everything you can to keep what you have.

I was just pulling at my hair for 15 or so minutes and managed to get about 75~ strands on an A4 white page.

Now I am freaking out because I had a shower last night with Nizoral and today only activity I have done is riding a motorbike with the helmet and I shed that many hairs by pulling.

do not use the nizoral shampoo, that will dry your hair way too much no wonder you are losing hair

look at the ingredients
it has hcl in it, hydrochloric acid

use the cream instead, it stays on your head longer than the shampoo and is much more gentle to your head, but make sure and get the 2 percent cream

the shampoo also has the main ingredient for enbalming fluid in it, and the cream has none of that or none or hydrochloric acid

when i used the shampoo i felt my hair was so dry it made me freak out

conditioner always has made my hair shed like crazy, you might think twice about using that if you are shedding

the cream does not smell bad but the thing i like is it stays on your head several hours till you wash it off, beware though lots of guys get shed with it

with the extreme little loss you have I am not even sure you are thinning,

If I was you and wanted to do preventative maintenance, i would hold off on nizoral , and I would get on a super hair vitamin and also mineral. If you are not on this, also MSM and horsetail, you would be amazed at the difference they make, That is all i took for 20 yrs for my hair, and they make a HUGE difference

I am one of the main persons who started a lot of the guys on the board on this, and I had to pound it into guys head until they finally agreed to give it a try, now lots of guys are taking the Maxi Hair.

the dandruff can cause a lot of fallout too so if u can get rid of that its great

as far as the vits you are taking unless you are taking 2000mcg timed released biotin, and taking either Ultra hair or Maxi hair, the top two in my book, you are missing 99 percent of what you need

a multivitamin not specifically for hair, is not anywhere near adequate

of course this is for guys like me who are in desperate need of hair help
in your case a normal multivitamin might be ok , since you are not realy thinning

but if you start to noticeably thin i would consider the super hair vitamins

natural dht blockers do not need FDA approval,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,:-D

not saying rogaine or prop do not work.

saying there are other things that work equally as well, depending on the person

if you cannot open your mind to that possibility. thats your problem

name one thing, natural.............that the tradional medical community or drug industry supports? ............you will be thinking a long time on that one

prop and rogaine are both drugs and thus that is why the traditional medical community pushes them, they make money on them

so i guess you are saying I am the only one to have had success with naturals on stopping my balding ? I guess me and all the other guys are imagining our sucess

Hey guys I am back again I have looked at passed photos of all my family members both sides of the family my dad in his 40s had a full head of hair, same with all the uncles etc one thing in common is a crows peak. Every male member had crows peak as their hairline.

Here is a picture of mine the thing thats weird is that I've had this crows peak all my life I have looked at very old photos of me when I was younger and I still had this type of hairline.

However at the top of the temples I can see little tiny tiny hairs where I think hair might have been... it's as if they are dying at the tops because they are not full length but very small hairs around the very top sides of the temples.

Thoughts?

Just found a baby pic of me that V shape is actually present during the time i was a baby! This was a shock to me! I will post the pic if you'd like but it's given me some hope that it may be just how my hairline is....

My dad has the same V thing and all his brothers also have the V

The only family member who is completely bald is my mothers mum's brother and my dads father

Hangin' has a certain set of opinions about things.

Most of the rest of us get decent results from Nizoral shampoo. And the FDA recognizes it as one of only 3 things to ever make a difference in MPB. Regardless of styling issues good or bad, it can be a benefit in the MPB battle without a doubt. It has a mild anti-DHT effect, and that's preventative.

As for determining whether or not you're losing hair, pluck hairs and put them under a magnifying glass to compare the shaft diameters. Forget about trying to count shed hairs. Don't keep trying to judge anything from pics of your cowlick or hairline.

MPB = thinned hair shafts.

You can spot the thinning in the actual shafts for at least several years before it gets cosmetically visible. Just get some thick hairs from the "donor zone" safe area to use as a baseline, and compare everything to them.

Thanks Cal I was thinking of going to see a Dermotologist but I have no idea how to find the best one. I am looking in the local pages but they all don't list that they specialize in hair only a few have hair removal how can I find a derm that knows about hairloss etc?

The fact is that most dermatologists know a lot less about MPB than you can learn yourself on the 'net. Read up for a few weeks and you'll know more than you'll get from the vast majority of paid docs.

The docs are mostly useful to write prescriptions. And when it comes to Propecia or something you can usually get it from a HT clinic too. (But don't believe everything that a HT clinic tells you about hair loss either. The vast majority of local HT clinics aren't where you want to actually get surgical HT work done at all.)

UPDATE PIC

Hey Cal I took some updated pictures today 3 months from the first pictures I posted here I was hoping you would have a look at them.

I have tried to part my hair as best as possible to show the area in question as usual...

I have been using Nizoral 2% for one week 6 times a week. I have had absolutely no side effects on my scalp from this and its helped my severe dandruff problem slightly still got heaps of dandruf crusts though.

I really am scared of jumping on to fin just yet so my hope atm is Nizoral as it can reduce DHT in the scalp I hear...

Thanks!

Hey thank you once again for replying to my questions. You have made me feel a little better however I am still unsure because I have recession of my temples and since I am receeding on my temples doesn't that mean that it's MPB meaning the crown is most probably thinning aswell as the temples?

I've got some pictures below.

THIS PICTURE BELOW IS from 2002 I was 13 years of age and as you can notice I got that V at age 3

BELOW THIS PIC WAS TAKEN 3 YEARS AGO WHEN I WAS 17
[image]

THESE TWO PICTURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN LAST WEEK
[image]

One thing I have noticed however that all the males on my dads side have those kind of temples into their 30's like a crows peak and have full heads of hair well into their 40's however with receded temples.

My question here is can recession of the front occur without thinning on the crown? Can I expect more recession on my temples?

Oh and what is the degree of my recession in those pictures what Norwood am I?

Thanks!

Hey Thanks for the reply once again. I am going to continue monitoring both crown and temples taking pictures every 3 months in the mean time I am going to continue Niz 2% 6 days a week (so far no side effects just positives). One thing I noticed was after a full weak of using Niz and stopping for two days my hair got so OILY so quickly!

I have a 3 month supply of Propecia in my Draw so if the crown begins to worsen I will begin treatment with Propecia but that is my last option hopefuly Nizoral does something to maintain the hair.

I guess there is always HT if my temples get worse but how much am I looking at spending to get a good job done?

Thanks again Hanginthere.

Heh too true mate. I was at Uni today and saw two people with the exact same crown as me both had what looked a full head of hair. Perhaps I've had this all along and worrying for nothing.

Don't get me wrong Hanginthere the reason I'm so worried or making a fuss about this is because at my age unfortunately its all about looks :(

NEW OLD CROWN PIC

Well I was going through some old photos of me taken about 2 - 3 Years ago and it has hit me like a tone of bricks...

As you can see there is no visible skin like in my other pictures and my crown looks very full giving me a round shape these days the back of my head is flat and I assume because I've lost hair there... :(

What do you reckon Hanginthere to me it looks different I will try make the same pose today. Otherwise looks like I'll be starting Propecia :( :(

I also found this picture you can see a tiny bit of the skull... I have also noticed that when I pull at my hair at the back, every now and then I pull out on of those tiny hairs I think they are called terminal haris about 2cm and very thin... Has this sealed the deal? Does this mean this is early MPB ...
