Treating hair loss with inhibitors of cholesterol synthesis (Propecia, Avodart, Spiro, DHT & hormones ...)

Androgens are synthesized from cholesterol.

So is it possible to decrease the androgen levels by preventing cholesterol synthesis?

There are various inhibitors of cholesterol synthesis like 'Statins'. Do they have any role to play in preventing hair loss?

Probably not. I do recall seeing a study in a medical journal a few years ago which tested the effect of a substance which is known to inhibit the conversion of cholesterol into pregnenolone (if I recall correctly). That conversion is the first biochemical step in the process of turning cholesterol into steroid hormones, including androgens. Unfortunately, the experiment had no effect on balding. Again, I hope I'm remembering the details correctly. It was quite a while ago that I read that.

The study might have shown that it is not effective. But what is the reason??

Intake of Statins ---------------------> Low cholesterol
Low cholesterol --------------> Low androgens
Low androgens --------------------> Decreased hair loss

So intake of statins-------------------> no hair loss...

Is it not an attractive theory?

I think the reason why it doesn't work is fairly obvious: there are so many feedback loops in the body, especially when it comes to the production and regulation of androgens, you can't just simply partially interefere with a far "upstream" factor like cholesterol synthesis and expect the effect to "trickle-down" into lower levels of androgens. Ahhhh, if only it were so simple! :-)

Statins are actually associated with hair loss. And inhibiting androgen production at such an early stage would be akin to castration if it did work. Oral Ketoconazole inhibits steroidogenesis if that is of interest. As does cyproterone acetate and I believe spironolacton (though perhaps only in the adrenal glands).
