more proof that attractiveness (HAIR) has real benefits in life (Support & General Discussions)

There used to be posters here (Jean, Crapman, etc) and there are still some (Hangingthere) who say hairloss doesn't do real damage to a person's life and that the damage hairloss causes to a person's life is all "in our minds." So I just saw a new study I wanted to share with you all:

Do Pretty People Earn More?
Looks Do Matter at Work

You know the woman -- the one who could wear a paper bag to a board meeting and still manage to look both beautiful and perfectly professional. As if it weren't annoying enough that she maintains her obnoxiously flat abs by lifting doughnuts to her mouth, it turns out your gorgeous co-worker may also be out-earning her less genetically-blessed colleagues.

Good looks can have a real impact on workers' bank accounts, according to research by Daniel Hamermesh and Jeff Biddle published in the Journal of Labor Economics. Attractive people earn about 5 percent more in hourly pay than their average-looking colleagues, who in turn earn 9 percent more per hour than the plainest-looking workers. This means if an average-looking person earned $40,000, their prettiest co-workers would make $42,000 while their least attractive colleagues brought home just $36,400. Plain-looking workers may also receive fewer promotions than those awarded to their more striking contemporaries.

Steven D. Spitz, D.M.D. and owner of cosmetic dentistry firm Smile Boston, said he once had a client who wanted his assistant to get veneers, and was even willing to pay for the dental work -- as long as the assistant asked for it. "He said this was a woman who was really good at her job and he was moving up (within the organization), but he couldn't take her with him because her teeth were so bad," Spitz said. The assistant never came in for the dental work, and Spitz said he didn't know what became of her career.

Are pretty people just more talented?

It remains uncertain whether the handsomest people translate their good looks into higher productivity, but students do consistently give better-looking professors higher evaluations than they give their less comely teachers, according to research by Hamermesh and Amy Parker at the University of Texas in Austin. Still, many experts warn against assigning too much value to beauty in the workplace, arguing that even if your good looks do get you in the door, they may not get you much farther.

"A person can be breathtaking in person and destroy that within the first five minutes by acting in a way that seems superior or behaving in a way that is lewd or provocative," said Francie Dalton, President of Dalton Alliances Inc., a consulting practice providing executive coaching to C-level clients. "Although I very firmly believe that looks are the first thing one notices, I am not convinced that looks trump things like competencies, interpersonal skills and other factors," she said.

Richard St. John, author of "Stupid, Ugly, Unlucky, and RICH," says he's so unconvinced of the connection between good looks and competence, he often chooses to hire the "visual underdog." "I'm not saying looks won't help you be successful at getting a date," St. John said. "I'm saying looks won't help you be successful in other areas of life."

Unfair, but legal

Unlike religion, national origin or disability, discrimination based on looks is legal in most jurisdictions, said James McDonald, Jr., managing partner of the Irvine office of employment law firm Fisher & Phillips LLP. Washington, D.C. and Santa Cruz, Calif. are two of the only municipalities with laws explicitly protecting workers against discrimination based on physical characteristics or personal appearance, he said. Still, that hasn't stopped workers from launching unsuccessful lawsuits.

Fortunately, there's -- literally -- more to attractiveness than meets the eye. Researchers Markus Mobius and Tanya Rosenblat found that confidence makes up 20 percent of perceived attractiveness. To ensure the image you're portraying is a confident one, be sure your posture doesn't betray your nervousness. Keep your back straight, head high and make eye contact with your associates.

I earn more then most of ppl I know. So who cares. Its not about looks imho, its about if you as person are truly convinced that you deserve the money.

If you are constantly depressed by your looks, chances are that you wont stand up and ask for a payrise.

Depressed & anxious ppl dont start up businesses either.

thats pretty much it. Its not the looks, its your state of mind. If you know you are worth the money you'll get it no matter how you look.

As much as your fat & bald friend has, he'd probably have achieved more in life for the same effort if he was just naturally more attractive.

your fat and bald friend may be the lucky exception, not the unlucky rule. in other words, the study did not conclude it's impossible for an ugly person to succeed just that it is less common for ugly people to succeed, but i guess you aren't smart enough to figure out what these studies say. no study ever showed that 100% of ugly people fail, studies just say that it is less likely for an ugly person to succeed than a pretty person. do you get it yet? also, your fat ugly friend my yet fail. you don't know that his restraunt will be a success as you yourself said that it just opened.

I can't believe that I agree - with Maneless! He's absolutely right. Mjones is committing a classic fallacy: claiming that one example proves (or disproves) a general population. Of course looks matter - we all know that. Some are able to overcome the disadvantages of poor looks (through intelligence, confidence, skill, etc.), but they will always face an initial prejudice that will - at sometime in their lives - cost them in some way. Its simple natural selection; nature uses outward appearance to broadcast fitness, and we are genetically programmed to be biased towards it. This tendency plays-out in everything we do, from inter-personal relationships to career situations.

(edited by HanginInThere, 23.10.2008, 11:13)

@ mjones

whiners are losers.......go getters succeed no matter what they look like

I bet if i went in and found a list of the most successful guys in the country, the USA for example...........money in the bank wise..............it would actually have a larger percentage of guys who are balding, than the general population

why? because these guys realize they cannot succeed on their looks. that is how the world operates........Looks might help you, they might get you in the door but after that, if you dont have brains personality, integrity, persistence, ...courage to go after your dreams........shrewdness to know how to handle any situation , the spine to pick yourself up off the floor and persevere even if you fall flat on your face...........A pretty face and nice hair wont mean SHIIT

guys who are losing their hair might have to work harder than guys who dont to achieve the same thing, but that extra hair work is a good thing, it gets them further in life, it makes their peers respect them for who they are , what they accomplish, not what they look like. Thats the real world.

As far as getting girls, sure the young 20 somethings might want some hot body stud with great hair, they get over that as they learn what is important in life. There are 1000 things more important in life than what you look like.

Why am I here on this site , you might ask. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look your best. and coming here gives me info on saving my hair, i want to look my best, we all do. But my point is, you guys who obsess over your hair to the point of thinking you cant get laid or a good job because you are losing your hair.................that is true IF YOU CONVINCE YOURSELF THAT IT IS TRUE................if you think you are a loser. you will be a loser. If you think hair does not matter, it does not matter.

what DOES MATTER to most people is a person who is comfortable in their own skin, a woman or someone who encounters you in the business world, or friends and family. are much more impressed by a guy who is balding and has confidence and not obsessed with his appearance..

a guy who is thinning who is weak, shy, wears a hat or a toupee..........and those who get a hair transplant..............are viewed as insecure losers

Much better to be confident a not give a fk and be thinning, than be viewed as someone who will go to any length to hide their thinning.

i am at a point when i kind of come to terms with my hair loss already, i feel that if i can have sh-i-t load of money, that s just as good if not better.

Yet another thread where some of the most often-posting guys on the site are insisting that hair loss doesn't really matter in life unless you "let it."

Who are you guys trying to convince?

those who are insisting, i think, never experimented the feeling of striking like a bunker bastard with girls, never been the target of all the looks in a public placer, never had hair that would make even woman jealous of,therefore you cant really blame them if they think that a man is only money and brain. those 2 are important but look has its place with them in a divine trinity of money ( power), brain ( degrees, smartnees), physic ( body+face).

the hair says so many things from the 1st instant, it says u r nice, raffined, if u dont have the hair well u do things but you'll have first to dissipate the clichets first, you'll have to show you are not a loser, you have to show that you can attract girls despite your condition...god how much i hate mpb..

Looks do matter on life but not in this "magical" way it is presented in the article.

Looks do matter in the self-confidence one person has. It is easier for a guy to build-up his confidence through the years if he looks good.

And if you have a strong self-confidence chances are that you will succeed in life.

Success in life (and therefore happyness) is perhaps the most complicated issue in today's society. To give an example, if there was something called "perfect success", it would require all of the following factors:

1) Hard work
2) Strong will
3) Brains
4) Luck
5) Looks

Depending on how much of each one of these you got, this is how successfull you will end up. So to sum up, looks is a plus to your life. Nothing more nothing less.

I could even give an opposite theory. People that look good tend to get everything ready for them especially when they are young, when looks matter the most. So a good looking person might not develop the strength of character that someone less handsome would. Also when the beauty fades away, sometimes even by 30, the good looking person might feel that his world is collapsing since handsome people tend to be more self-centered than others.

I could just as easily argue that getting more out of life at the critical younger ages can set you in motion for a better life no matter what happens later on.

And then there's personality effects. If you're unattractive or had a bad standout trait in the critical early decades, that WILL affect you for the rest of your life. It's not something that a hotter wife or a better job can just "fix" at some hypothetical later date when MPB cures finally start working. The setbacks of the early problems can really help shape who you are, and it's NOT always a positive effect.

The confidence thing just makes me laugh.

Saying all we really need from better looks is the boost in "confidence?" What a joke! What TOTAL denial of reality! We might as well be putting our heads into the sand like a bunch of friggin ostriches!

This is a ridiculous crock of bullsh*t. I think it's just plain insulting the intelligence of ugly people when we try to say this to them. It's something that our society tells ourselves because we don't want to face the obvious: We're wretchedly superficial. We're so bad that we don't even realize when we're doing it most of the time.

No thanks. I'd rather face reality. Good looks are a genetic lottery that can affect every single day of your life. Nothing about it is the slightest bit fair. I accept it. I won't bullsh*t myself just to feel a little tiny extra (false) sense of empowerment over my situation. That's just not how I choose to cope.

wow, you guys make me ill. one says "looks are everything in your life", the next guy says "no, looks and hair dont matter".

truth is in between. but one thing... when you look like shiit, then accept it. when you re poor, then work harder.

you all have so extreme opinions. the truth lies in between. yes , looks matter, especially when you re young. but what can you do? get as many aesthetic surgeries as you can??

other people care much less about your looks and way more on what you think and do for them..........a girl on a date would much rather have a guy who is interested in HER, has a personality sense of humor something going for him, than some good looking guy who talks about himself the whole night

you guys are obsessed with your own appearance

See? What's going on right now is eactly the REAL point I was trying to make.

It has to be either everything or nothing with some of you.

Some of you cannot deal with the fact that it IS relevant, it DOES make a difference in life for many people, AND YET YOUR LIFE IS STILL WORTH LIVING EVEN THOUGH YOU WON'T HAVE GOOOD HAIR! Get it? THIS is dealing with reality! Neither of the two extremes is accepting the truth like a mature adult!

Many times i have said it is just hair, and hair loss does not matter.......but my underlying theme is yes it does affect your life and it sucks........., it makes it more difficult to get dates, it makes life in general suck, but you have to buck up and get a spine and DEAL WITH IT AND STOP CRYING AND MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE

so your assessment that the extreme other side which would be me.......is inaccurately portraying the problem and not dealing with reality.......is bullshiit, I tell guys to face facts and move on with their lives, a

Hangin, you read my big post and then responded that you basically heard "It's either good hair or Dr. Kevorkian."

I would call that viewpoint pretty extreme.

meaning some of the posters on the board are such whiners that they think their life is crap with no hair................which you seem to be of that mindset

you keep pushing that theory as if it will convince us we are all losers........and if we dont agree you push harder

how much sense does that viewpoint make?

hanging, you are extreme. you always try to convince people that they should think the way you think is good for them. it just doesnt work. but you always try it. you really have too much time...
